It's harder to defend with less players on the field, your positioning and technique has a small margin for error. 13 a side there's some more safety in numbers, structured plays etc.
I understand there is a relativity argument with more attacking players to defend in 13 a side and that the games are taken more seriously and officiated much tighter (unfortunately).
But the 9s gives a guide and shouldn't be discounted.
