  • Backline 2016

I spoke today with a friend I trust. He had spoken this week with a member of our board. He named him but I won't list his name here.
    This is what he shared:
    1. FB will be Flash
    2. Wingers will be SKD & JTS
    3. Centres Fergo & Latrell
    6. Keary
    7. Dog Rooter

Make of this what you will. Please don't shoot messenger. I am in no way affiliated with the club and don't prêtent to have insights. Just sharing what was told to me.

Interesting is the club does not rate Toupo....

Also the club rates the 4 u20s players: rts plus garvey, butcher, manu

I doubt Garvey will hang around for 5 years waiting for Friend to retire. There isn't exactly an over supply of good hookers going around at the moment, I think he'll get an opportunity somewhere else well before he will with us.

only thing im surprised about is JTS over Manu, maybe for better kick returns or i suppose just because he's a specialist winger.

I know it won't happen but I would let Friend go and keep Garvey. I am over aimless third and fourth tackle kicks, scoots down the blind when nothing is on, ignoring the 5/8, grubber kicks when no one else knows what is going on.

We need a clean out for salary cap management, goodbye Friend, SKD, Toops, Guerra, Evans, Gordon obviously and Fergo if he doesn't rediscover something near his best form.

I posted last year thay Guerra, tupou and Moa were all being punted after having a similar conversation. Moa eventuated. Guerra was well on the way to happening before Trent stepped in. Tupou was the one I had not heard anything of. If we are starting JTS over tupou (which I think is ridiculous) then it would appear toops career is over with us.

None of that would really surprise me except JTS. Can't see how he would have jumped Toops and Manu for a starting spot.

I see JTS as a potential starter in 2018, he makes sense to me as he is cheap but strong with a low centre of gravity in the Josh Mansour mould with a good workrate and excellent work ethic. I don't see it for 2017, where this falls down is board members are unlikely to be across the team and it is so far out from round 1 that some positions wouldn't be final.

Manu should be a certainty over toops and jts. He is an excitements machine.

                    Thanks axe.

Really not sure what to think of our backline, the only wow factor is Mitchell, Gordon is old and slow, but reliable,
skd, pretty much over his error riddled game,
                    fergo, depends who turns up,
And if toops and jts are being tossed up, well it sort of shows the mess we are in.

On the plus side I'm looking forward to see what carter,Liam knight and the abusive thug have to offer jwh and co in the forwards and hope Watson gets at least 25-30min on the field for friend.

Nah I dont believe it. Don't believe that Topou would be left out nor do I believe the line up for a game in March would be finalised in December.

Since when do board members pick the team anyway?

Gordon (Will swap around with Mitchell)
                        Mitchell
                        Fergo
Manu ( Depends on what sort of physical condition he is in after the off season)
                        SKD
                        Keary
                        Pearce

The spirit of the conversation was how we will have one of the best backlines next year. Personally, I don't draw the same conclusion nor the same enthusiasm.

Take from it what you will. As stated it was not my conversation so it was third party but from some one in a position in life to have reason to meet the board member for business.

What sparked my interest was where Latrell, SKD are being considered and how highly JTS was regarded.

It was about what position they are training for and what vision Robbo has for certain players. I did not state this will be the team in Round 1, merely this Senior and well-known board member's point of view re the backline
