  • Our forward pack

The Islanders cop a lot of criticism about being lazy. We all give it to Jared about ill-discipline.

At the same time, we reckon Kennedy has Origin written all over him, and that Ryles and Myles lead our pack.

    **** me.

Frank Paul, Mose and JWH were the only ones who rolled their sleeves up, cut the bullshit, and ran straight and hard.

Sure, Ryles and Myles have a good workrate, but Jesus Christ are they LETHARGIC. They both take a year and a half to stand up and play the damn thing after they've been tackled! That is deadset the worst game I've seen from Myles in 2 and a bit years.

Martin Kennedy is too big a boy to lose 90% of his contact. Smaller blokes were sitting him on his arse, and he didn't get up and have another crack, he just lay down. Run hard, you idiot, you're built like a ****ing brick.

Now don't get me wrong, I know how good Nate can be. But he's only good when he actually cares - otherwise, he does next to **** all. As for Ryles, unless he finds some freaking enthusiasm, I'd rather get some bloke in who actually looks like he wants to get up and go again after he gets put down, and who doesn't give idiotic penalties away, or waste ten minutes a game not binding properly in a scrum.

Had to get that off my chest. These three need a wake up call. When you're that big, it's pretty damn simple. Run straight, and run hard. Get up as quickly as possible, and do it again.

Excellent post. We have too many girls who run half hearted, then take a year to get up and play the ball.

Nate will come good around Origin time. He needs to make the QLD team again.

On today's showing hard to disagree with any of that, thought JWH especially was very good one of his best showings to date.

Kennedy hasn't impressed since starting... maybe too much too soon.

          JWH played strongly.
He tried a shoulder charge right on our line leading to the try that put Manly back in front for the rest of the game.

Selfish play IMHO as he should have shut the play down rather than go for the hit.

          Anyone else remember this? Comments?

Wouldn't be too harsh on JWH in this case, the shoulder charge connected, got the player to the floor, but the boys did not back it up by completing the tackle.

In the end, Mose, JWH and FPN can hold their heads up, they played strong games in a poor performing side today.

the only excuse I can think of for Myles was that he was hungover.. Everytime he made a tackle it seemed he wanted to fall asleep on the tackled player.. It was back to 2009 for him when he was a complete liability.

Ryles 31 tackles, 10 hitups for 97 metres on a steamy and boggy track. I hope he plays that poorly every week!

Agree Blind Freddy. I actually thought JWH was very controlled today. If it wasn't for him Mose and FPN we would've lost by more.

I would start with Mose and FPN next week and let Myles come off the bench. Maybe that will motivate him.

I would also give Kennedy a run with Newtown to get him fit, hungry and motivated.

I noted that both Nate and Rylesy have good workrates.

It's more how they go about their work that is worrying.

When Mose (JWH and FPN also, but to a lesser extent) runs at the line, the opposition deadset shits themselves. Last week, against Souffs, not one of them wanted a bar of it, and it was the same this week - he just went straight through them.

Ryles and Myles run a lot, but they don't run hard or with intent, and that's the problem. Nine times out of ten, they don't fall through the line, or maintain forward momentum, resulting in an incredibly slow play the ball, because they are too upright and halt at contact (and are thus driven back), instead of accelerating through it. Now, this could be a technical problem, but considering the experience of these two, I'd say they know what they should be doing. I reckon it's an attitude problem - I don't see the intent to win the contact, or the intent to get a quick play the ball in. It just isn't there.

The ruck is fast becoming, if it isn't already, the most important area of a rugby league game. You win the ruck by winning the contact - go through the tackle, don't let them bend you over, to adopt Smithy's lexicon, and slow it down. Actually attempt to get up quickly.

Kennedy has no leg drive to break tackles, he is too top heavy for me.

FPN was very good again, he always has a go.

when ryles hit the defensive line, watch how he just lets his legs drop...he doesnt pump them at all...he hits the line and drops....if then opposition pick him up,he shits himself and throws the ball backwards ....he didnt do it today but he did it quite a few times last year
