  • Perrett needs to be fullback

Sammys game against the Storm confirmed to me that he needs to be put back in at fullback. No more Mini, no more Carney, put Perrett at fullback, Carney into the halves, Mini on the wing and Anasta in at lock. He made some great linebreaks and some long runs down the field, carving the storm up. Havent seen Mini do that for years.

    1. Perrett
    2. Minichiello
    3. Linnett
    4. SKD
    5. Graham
    6. Carney
    7. Pearce
    8. Ryles
    9. Friend
    10. Nuuasala
    11. Myles
    12. Aubusson
    13. Anasta (c)

    14. Symonds
    15. Masoe / JWH
    16. Kouparitsis
    17. Conn

He certainly helps the forwards out.

perretts downfall as a fullback is his support play, speed and ball playing. I think his passing game in particular has improved quite a bit and with a bit more time i think he could develop a good enough passing game to be dangerous chiming in at third reciever. In spite of this, he seems to lack the acceleration and instinctual support play that the top quality fullbacks like slater and coote have.

Having said this i think that this is probably his best position so it may just be a matter of playing him at fullback all year next year and even in preseason and see how he goes because he has always only been a fill-in so maybe with a preseason under his belt he may add those few things to his game. That would accomodate a real flyer and strike weapon down the flank for us which is what we are lacking. If we can get rid of mini and replace him with a gun winger like uate i think our backline all of a sudden looks much much stronger.
      1. Perrett
      2. Uate
      3. Linnett
      4. SKD
      5. Graham
      6. Carney
      7. Pearce

This is without factoring in that anasta will also go in a year or two and accomodate another strike outside back but i think that that looks like a pretty solid base to build a really potent backline on with the likes of moeakiola, towers, kerillah and naughton as well as leilua and blair from the real youngsters for depth.

unless there's a need for a reshuffle due to injury, Carney will be straight back there when Pearce returns

        sadly

Perrett is not a fullback - he is an excellent dummy half runner, is extremely strong and makes plenty of metres. Unfortunately that is his limit.

TOK - I actually think you are on the money but I don't really understand why Smith is persisting with this? Mini offers much more as a fullback and his best days are past.

because there's nowhere else for Anasta to play, so we sacrifice our best attacking option and play him (Carney) at fullback

If you make him 13, 11 or 12 his game will barely change for mine as long as carney is in the line is makes little difference

no way is Braith a better option in those positions than fpn, Myles or Maubs

Carney MUST be in the line, having him at the back is lunacy

I'd like to think that after Smithy's comments over the weekend that the back half of the season he will replace players that are not up to scratch on a more consistent basis. Giving players like Masoe, Leilua, Kennedy and Linnett their opportunity gives me a little more confidence in that. I think that Carney's game in the halves last week will also bring him to ultimately realise that that is where he needs to be and the fullback experiment didn't go to his expectations. My guess is that he will put Anasta at lock but play him more like a second fiddle 5/8 in attack leaving FPN, Myles and Maubs to do their normal thing. I wouldn't mind seeing Anasta play out in the centres instead of SKD but unfortunately the latter will never be dropped. I would still have major concerns with the fullback as Mini and Perrett are not ideal options but far better than keeping Carney there just to accomodate Anasta at 5/8.

Does this mean we are going to play with 14 on the field..

If Anasta gets pushed into the pack, people need to understand that it is at the expense of either Myles, FPN or Maubs..

was sounding ok until I got to the "Braith in the centres" part

Braith would be the slowest centre in history

Yep. It would be crazy to have him there. It is very simple Anasta can only play 6. He would have to be injured or dropped to be moved from there.

                            Answer me this:

Does he offer more than SKD? He runs straight, he has a step, he can pass a ball, he can draw and pass, he doesn't have as many SKD moments, he can kick through, his defense is far superior. Please enlighten me on what SKD can offer that is better than Anasta. Anasta mainly attacks on the left and defends on the left, so centre is not as bad as it sounds.

PTB - FPN played 80 minutes on the weekend but Anasta at lock can give him a rest which I believe would make him more potent. Rotation is the key if Anasta moves into lock. As I have mentioned before, is it overall better for the team to have Carney at fullback at the expense of keeping Anasta at 5/8? Anasta will never be dropped, so if the answer to the question is No then Smithy needs to find the best fit for Anasta elsewhere.

                              Pace.

That was precisely the issue that Geohood had with your suggestion in the first place.
