Jimmy's goal kicking lone wins us games.
Hastings is still a kid and while talented, isn't first pick because Maloney's a better half at present!
Sure... if he gets offered millions then go for it. However, he's probably not gonna be asking for as much as say DCE, Cronk, JT, (Reynolds/Hodkinson) and potentially guys like Reynolds/Keary.
Pearce/Hastings are just as likely to run away if offered fat contracts (although sure... Pearce leaving is about as likely as Slater leaving the Storm). Still, who says Maloney has to go, or even wants to go? Or that this will be his last contract!
All players can potentially get massive offers and I see no issue with this. Loyalty's one thing but there's a point where loyalty and stupidity meet... I don't think Maloney is the only one who would be looking for the best deal out there.

I'd be more than happy to offer Jimmy another two year contract at whatever we can realistically afford. Although at 28 he is likely to have maybe 4 years of good football in him. I think a few clubs out there would take the risk of a four year contract at big money but I don't think we will. Time will tell.

IMO unless you're say Cameron Smith then how you'll be in 4 years time is a massive uncertainty. I would even argue that the Storm will continue to go downhill holding onto Smith, Cronk and Slater. Sure they are pretty safe bets... but I reckon in 4 years time we'll have a seasoned RTS, Pearce/Maloney/Hastings and Friend (who'll possibly take over for QLD if e.g. QLD lose another 2 series') whereas they'll have a grey-haired big 3 on big bucks until retirement.
Even doing it for somebody like Yow Yeh ended up burning Brisbane when an injury gave him a disability stopping him from walking properly (still can't believe a broken ankle can end somebody's career no matter how bad!!)
People criticise SBW's approach but he delivered!!! $550k a year then we negotiate based on the corcumstances. The NRL isn't handing out cushy government jobs, it's all about private business/contracts. IMO the better players will always be in demand so won't be as keen to sign 4 year contracts on ordinary pay.
Smith/Slater/Cronk could probably all get $1 million+ a season in the open market. However, I think all 3 know they could get injured tomorrow, lose form/speed and become liabilities rather than assets. I wouldn't personally want too many stars signing 4 year contracts...

No player, no matter how good is worth a million a season. This isn't soccer or the IPL, this is a glorified local comp that has never reached that highest level. Less people watch league every week than watch college football, which is only watched by less than 5% of the US population of 215 million.SUPER DRAGON!

While say GI is on 1 million+ a season I agree. It's a team sport and something has to give if 1/6 of your salary is dedicated to one man.
With the exception of Souffs last year (who I won't whinge about) I reckon teamsthat throw too much at securing 1 player miss the point.
Dragons won in 2010 without any million dollar stars. We won in 2013 (and were minor premiers in 2014) because we had a well balanced set of books with nobody on over 550k (including SBW and Jennings). Manly again... balanced but no million dollar stars. Melbourne? Cheated then did all they could to keep the big 3... which I think they'll end up paying for (although I suspect Smith is really the coach with Slater coaching the backs).
Yeah... given the salary cap, I think it's difficult to justify a 1 million dollar player.
