  • Toops run down by Johnson

Must admit I was rather surprised when Johnson reeled in Toops with a bit of start too.

I had Toops pegged as our strongest over the 100m just in front of Pearcey. RTS and Jenko get a stitch at the 50m although dynamite off the mark.

Guess it shows how lightning fast Johnson is.

He looked gassed towards the end. I think he expended a lot of energy catching the ball and busting a few tackles on a windy run just to make the break.

I reckon SKD might be our quickest over 100m.

Remember that Johnson did a similar thing to Jennings last year. He is very very fast.

To be honest, I reckon Toops expected to be caught, and seemed to be looking round for the last 30 metres or so for support rather than heading for the line.

Once he got caught, I was pleased he took the tackle rather than panic and throw the ball anywhere like some players seem to do.

Not taking anything away from Johnson, he's lightning fast...although I read somewhere that he reckons Tomkins is quicker.

He ended up 8m out. I reckon if he puts his head down instead of backing his fend (which he used successfully against parra earlier in the year) then he probably scores on the reach. But he did look gassed after the swervy run as Tommy mentioned.

I was not surprised at all. He is an absolute flyer and would run down most players.

The key is that Johnson, like Hayne, has a natural sprinters technique.

And that's why they're arguably two of the top 5 fastest players in the NRL over a 60m+ sprint.

Jennings is the opposite. After his first try yesterday I mentioned to my dad that his speed in a 10m radius is amazing.

Be that his footwork, acceleration, lateral movement - he's just so hard to stop when the defence are sliding on the back foot.

There is no shame being chased down by Johnson

Toops had to jump, break tackles & run hard, he was looking early for support & being the wise head on young shoulders took the tackle knowing his mates would finish.

Toops has matured & the finishing school that is origin is the best qualification ever.

I cant say I was suprised but I thought he took the foot off the pedal and tried to line up a fend should have backed himself would have gone close, toups isnt express and he looked buggered

Would have liked to have seen Toups smash the gas. He was looking for support almost straight away and then was fixated on Johnson.

Exactly. Tupes cost himself by looking back.

You also lose speed without a free swing of the arms.

Yup. Put blinkers on him next start.

I wasn't totally surprised he got run down. Well known Johnson is one of the quickest going round ... That said we were discussing after the tackle how much distance does the ball carrier loose since he is carrying the ball ... we thought close to 10m over that distance that Toops ran

I don't think any of our players would be near the top 10 over 50m plus, jenko is very quick over 20 though.

Korebeti they say is quickest, followed by Johnston, mead, kelly, and a few others they mentioned.

Gee that run by remradra the other night was awesome to see.

I just had the same thought as I'm watching it now on Bigpond sport. If he had just kept running straight and not look around (like I was yelling at him to do, why the men in my life never listen to me I'll never know ) then I really think he would have scored.
