And from a different perspective, legal action means the defendants (be they The SMH or the NSWTAB) will need to defend their claims. In terms of the Herald, that would mean identifying the anonymous Roosters player who cast serious doubts as to the integrity of other players.
In terms of the NSW TAB, it could mean viewing CCTV footage from TAB outlets where the 13+ bets were placed in order to identify who placed them
For punters not wishing to have any real record kept of a bet, betting at a TAB outlet is ideal. If you bet with a bookmaker over the phone or online, or with Betfair, or even if via a TAB phone account, your name is of course recorded in terms of all bets made from your account. At a TAB outlet, it's completely anonymous
This investigation by the VCGR was primarily about rubber stamping claims by the NRL that no evidence had been presented to substantiate the claims of a fix. It wasn't about looking for any evidence. Kind of like somebody not being charged with something because the authorities don't have enough evidence to mahe the charge stick. Totally different to being charged and then found not guilty
