I presume it's not unlike airplane tickets, where an airline releases 'fare allocations', which might mean that of the 100-odd cattle-class seats in a given flight, they may get split into 5 lots of 20, with each lot released strategically at different times and at different rates.
In one day, you could buy a flight to London for say $1650, and 15 mins later your mate could buy a ticket on the same flight, 2 seats away from you and pay $2000.
