  • Daniel Tupou

Just thought I'd start a thread on the guy to get an idea of what others think. It's really good to have an extremely tall, athletic guy out there (instead of a nuggety dwarf.) I've been impressed a few times now by his ability to score in the corner.

Last night I was at the Labor club with 2 screens... 1 had the NRL the other had union. Moments after Tupou scored, I saw Israel Folau go over for a decent try (nothing THAT special but it was the kind that required a LOT of speed and handling.) Got me thinking, the 2 guys are physically quite similar. They also both have a habit of scoring in pretty well every game they play...

Most teams have a tall, fast, acrobatic, athletic winger whose job it is to chase kicks and catch the opposition off-guard. Combined with some creative kicking/passing from our new halves and centres pairings... is this guy up for an extremely successful, high scoring season?

He looks the goods. Gives us a real attacking weapon esp with the ball in the air. Is clearly ahead of Oldfield in the pecking order.

I'd probably play them on each flank if moga returns this year...would give us scary strike power across the park.

Bit early for that I think...needs to develop upper body more for that lanky frame too.

I think tupou has a few errors in his game he needs to iron out but apart from that he is a real talent. What impresses me most is POS in getting him to us. We gave parra Blair - someone who had played in every junior rep team you possibly could and performed well in the 20s for a player who had no junior rep experience and was far from a 20s stand out. If that isnt a sign of a good talent scout I dont know what is

Personally I thought Toups struggled a bit last night. He certainly had some great moments like his try and his kick for Jennings but I think that early mistake deep in our territory really played with his confidence. He is certainly not suited to the wet weather either. His running onto the ball was not nearly as spirited as it was against Manly and that went he wasn't bending the line the same and landing in a good position on the ground. He got stopped in most of his runs and the third man would take his ankles and 2m is a long way to fall backwards, meaning he was both losing ground and getting a slow play the ball.

All that being said, I believe most weeks, in particular when its dry he will go back to being extremely dominant and if last night was one of his bad games then he's in for a very good season.

Will be very interesting if Moga comes back this season. Mini will have a spot at either FB or wing and if Tupou is in good form he won't be dropped. RTS has to be at fullback surely by then, and I don't think he'll be played off the bench. So it might come down to how SKD is playing. Could Moga slot straight into right centre running into the finals? Last nights conditions certainly did not suit SKD and tbf he defended in the line generally quite well other than one small mistake. Just like Oldfield last week if he catches that pass from RTS and scores the perception of how he played probably changes from terrible to reasonable.

that's the thing though yak. I said this to you last week as well, but we have these perceptions of the players for a reason. if skd had caught the ball, we would've thought he played a reasonable game. but he didn't. a better player would have caught the ball.

Yes I understand that Kegs. I'm just demonstrating how fine the line is.

I know you understand yak, didn't want to make it seem like I was having a go at you there.

Moga showed less in more games in comparison to Tupou. If Moga is going to dislodge Tupou from his spot then he better be doing incredible things in NSW Cup.

Yeah I know you weren't mate. And nah probably no report for this one. Mates I was going with bailed cos of the weather so just watched it at a mates place. I figure enough people saw the game to provide good feedback about how we went without me rambling on. Plus i always feel you see a lot more at the game and definitely get a better idea of structure in attack and defence and how hard players are working off the ball. Made it to the NYC game yesterday though so if anyone wants to know how anyone went in particular then just let me know.
