  • Insight into our Marquee signing

    http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/l...202-2dr1z.html

I thoroughly enjoyed the read myself. Combined with an article in The DT today about Willie Mason and NFL it makes you think a bit more about all things sport and life as an elite athlete rather than seeing it from a fan and club point of view.

Read the article and it certainly seems as though SBW is going to be a Roosters player for but a short time meaning 2014 is unlikely.

I think mason is kidding himself with a few of those comments on the nfl.

Saying that GI and sonny bill "could easily make 5 million a year". They pretty much just based that off the fact that Zach miller was overpaid at 9mil/year by a desperate team. When in actual fact a guy like Vernon Davis (one of, if not, the best TE's in the nfl) makes just over 5 million. Not only is Davis a freakish athlete (he'd have it over GI IMO) but he's also a freakishly talented tight end. So to say that someone with no experience (in a pretty technical position) could walk in and earn as much as the best in the business, based off athleticism is ridiculous.

Who knows what a league player could do in the nfl but you can just about guarantee there'll be no teams lining up offering that kind of money to find out.

If SBW has a great year then I will be happy, If he doesn't stay on next year, so be it. Can't worry about what he will do in the future. The player I would be chasing would be Canberra forward, Josh Papali. Good on his feet, good passing game and can tackle.

I don't think he was literally saying they would be signed up for that money, more a throw away line during what seems to be a discussion on GI and SBW ability and how our league guys would go. What better person to take a throw away line than dick-cheeks himself and try and make comparisons about a national game played in a country with population of 320 million and try to compare with a game which battles with AFL to be the national game in country of 25 million.

I take your points though and it's just a dressed up story by the DT.

The reason I tied that article quoting Mason in it was more about what he said about Noad and Pepponis blocking him etc and the restrictions athletes get themselves into through contracts, and how compared with the Khoder and SBW roll. Khoder is no mug. Only thing is as he says he is lucky who he has his hands on-SBW/Quade and Mundine previously.

True, I guess I overlooked who the quotes were actually coming from.

Couldn't agree more!! When you have a player like Vernon Davis it's quite offensive to even suggest that someone from the NRL could make similar money. I don't care who you are... You need to play or be involved with the game from a relatively young age to be a success (with the exception of punters, but that still takes a lot of hard work). Go the Niners!!!!!!!!

Good article. Would like to know more about the reasons for leaving the Dogs. He constantly has his ethics and morals questioned because of the way he left, and rightly so, until he comes up with something that supports his decision to leave in the way he did.
As I have said in other threads and posts, and this article just underlines it, we REALLY need to win the comp with him this year, because this could be our one and only chance to have him in our side.

Hopefully amongst all the "me" this and "me" that, he can actually be part of a "team"

Are you questioning $BWs commitment to his teammates???

I have never heard a player bag him other than when he walked from the Boggs. And for that he paid with $$$, paid with exclusion and apologized privately and publicly.

In fact just the other day he backed his mate Mundane publicly and copped a bagging for it.

Did you not see Reds post about $BW at the airport??? What he said to others about being a Rooster???

Or are you just antagonizing and inflaming the situation as usual Teabags???

And you wonder why people feel the need to question your motives, especially your "claim" to being one of us, you know an Easts man.

                          The FlogPen .

                          You know it makes sense.

my question is, SBW came out and said he will quit boxing and focus on league if he loses his next fight. So what happens if he loses the next fight ? Will he re-sign with us for few more years then and only concentrate on league ?

backwards, you're so far off the mark nowadays I can barely be bothered with you, but I'll try and explain my point of view to you. Hopefully you can stay on the topic and respond to what I actually say.

My concern with SBW comes about because of the "it's all about me" attitude he and the other Khoder Nasser disciples display. Even as recently as a few years back, anyone who carried on like these guys do would have been pretty much ostracized from any club that was serious about building a culture that was about the team. I'm sure there are many clubs even now who wouldn't touch him. For clubs looking for long term success, that's the number one priority - the team. Guys who don't subscribe to that, regardless of how good a player they are, do more harm than good. His code hopping, one year deal, bigshot persona gives me reason to believe he may not be a team player. With the sad news of Feris Ashton's passing, I was thinking about the difference between between a man like him and SBW. That great quote about watching the club as a youngster, and the honour it was for him to then play for the Roosters. Please spare me the "you're not an East man" crap. I'm hoping like hell he turns out to be fantastic for the club, but I have my doubts
