  • Mini maybe the next Capt

    From Yesterdays News:

THE Roosters may have missed out on a second straight finals series - and only just avoided the wooden spoon - but the glamour club are bound to turn the corner in 2013.

And cult hero Anthony Minichiello has even nominated the five players he thinks can help the Bondi club return to September.

The Chooks were brilliant in their 44-20 victory over the Wests Tigers on Sunday, which left plenty of fans wondering where that blistering form had been all season.

Minichiello, who celebrated his 250th game on the weekend with a try, would love to make it successive wins to finish the year against competition leaders Canterbury on Saturday.

Mini was even more enthusiastic about starting afresh next season.

And on top of his list of five players to resurrect the Roosters was none other than Sonny Bill Williams.

"Sonny Bill is coming to the club, so that's pretty exciting," Minichiello said. "He's been out of the game a while, but he's one of the top players in union and league, he's certainly a marquee player who will bring in sponsors, fans and hopefully wins.

"James Maloney will also come in and partner Mitchell Pearce in the halves. He's a good goal-kicker and will bring some leadership to the team as well."

Minichiello gave young back-rower Boyd Cordner a huge wrap, and said: "He's had a full year of first grade now, he's tough, has a great attitude and will only step it up again with another pre-season under his belt."

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck scored his first NRL try on the weekend and has even been tipped as Minichiello's long-term No. 1 successor. While Minichiello has no plans to relinquish the fullback gig, he was happy to add Tuivasa-Sheck to his top five.

"He's got speed and footwork and another guy who will be better with another pre-season," Minichiello said.

The final player on the veteran's list has not even been sighted in the NRL, but is bound to make a real impression next year.

"Kane Evans is a front-rower in the Toyota Cup who has been outstanding. He's got a tough attitude and loves to mix it up with the big boys. I'm looking forward to playing with him," Minichiello said.

He said the challenge this Saturday would be repeating what they did against the Tigers.

"It would be nice to finish with another win," said Minichiello, who received nearly 1000 messages of encouragement from fans before Sunday's milestone.

"The Dogs had a loss on the weekend, so they'll be out to rectify that this week. It will be a tough game, but if we play like we did yesterday, it will be a good match.

"We've got to play like that on a consistent basis, and get everyone up and mentally prepared.

"I think that if everything goes well next year, there's the possibility we'll do well in the comp - but a lot of hard work needs to happen, and that will start in the pre-season."

Mini is a legend, but for the good of the team he needs to either retire or play wing for Newtown next year and only be called upon if we get a few injuries.

As we don't have a real standout for captain, I like the idea of co-captains with choosing the best two of Kennedy, Pearce, Cordner, SBW or Maloney.
The year 2013 marks the beginning of the Roosters next 'decade of excellence', and it will prove to be more successful than the last!

Im not a fan of co-captains - seems like a wank to me. That said, its not like having 'a' captain doesnt mean you have somewhat of a leadership group operating behind it. We need to choose 1 captain and get behind him. I wouldnt be making it mini - he only has a year left in him and we need to keep moving forward. The candidates imo are Kennedy and Pearce. Cordner would be great but is too young; SBW is an enigma not a captain and maloney will be coming to our club for the first time - he doesnt need/deserve the captaincy yet - you have to earn it. It could be a good thing for pearce (like freddy) and maybe help us keep him which I think is important....

Kennedy has leader written all over him. Im also led to believe that in their pre-season leader selection, he was the outstanding performer in the specified categories and also among the playing group. He also seems to have just enough experience to be given the (c). On maubs, I think he is also a good option but a bit meek imo - we need a fearless 'follow me' leader who is also well spoken - thats why kennedy is my pick.

Most of the players want mini to be captain, can't see anyone else getting it.

All fair points roz, except that I don't believe having co-captains is a wank as it seems to have worked very well with Manly having Lyon and King.

As you say Kennedy and Pearce would be the more favored two, ideally just like Manly you would want one co-captain in the forwards and one in the backs. I would not be against SBW being one if it meant encouraging him to stay with us for 4-5 years. Cordner would be great but just that year or two away from it really suiting him and the club.

Don't worry they still don't get it. According to them Mini is playing well and he deserves the captaincy.

One question for anyone. How many of Tupou's tries would Mini have scored if he was on the wing on Sunday?

The only thing Mini will do next year is keep out good, young, exciting players and lessen our chances of winning games.

He had a great day on Sunday, much better than poor old Fitzy got in his last game. Do the right thing Mini and walk away.

Mini's form will decide if he holds down a wing spot next season, highly unlikely but, there is only one real option for our captain next season and that is James Maloney, he is now experienced enough to handle it, will be an 80 minute player, and be in the halves, the best position to captain a side from.
As much as I love what Mini has done for the club, the club also has been there for him, thru all his back injuries, and I cant believe he hasen't had the balls to tell Easts, that his time as an NRL player is over, and he'll go instead of holding a younger player out of a position. He is still playing ok to earn a good quid in EPL or Italian Rugby..

IF (and that is a big if) Pearce re-signs during the offseason I would have he and Marty K as co-captains in a similar fashion to what Manly do. That is, Pearce will provide the bulk of the onfield leadership (which he basically does now anyway) and Marty will fill the off-field and speaking leadership role, which he would excel at.

Mini can be 'emergency' - he can do it if and when neither of those two are on the park - which is hopefully not often!

I like your idea Novice but I'd pick Cordner over Martin. He has future captaincy written all over him and handles the media aspect well. So hand that to him and let Pearce control onfield leadership as you say.

apart from last week this year the only thing Kennedy had written on him was soft, in big capital letters.

Pearce maybe, but Cordner is a leader more than most

I was thinking Boyd, but then thought he was a little young for the role - remember he's only just turned 20. Whilst he and Marty would have similar games up their sleeve, Marty is a few years older and has the more confident presence and good body language. Marty is also a very straight shooter which I believe will be appreciated by the media.

Given our fractured relationship with some media outlets, I wouldn't like to see Boyd being set on by them, espec if he manages to slip up off field.

I like the idea of Kennedy & Pearce as co-captains.

I know it would bring out the best in Marty.

I hope it would be a positive (stabilising) influence on Junior Jnr.

Boyd is wondeful prospect, and certainly future captain material, but 2013 is a bit too soon.

I don't want Pearce captain for the simple fact the telegraph have it in for him and him being captain will bring even more scrutiny his way. Kennedy has had an ordinary year, and I don't have a high opinion of him as a player, that's just my opinion though. Also, if they make him captain he would need to play more minutes and stop giving away dumb penalties like he does.
Boyd is a future leader in 2or 3 years but Parra made Cayless captain at a young age and it never affected his game.
I can't see Mini leaving or being shoved if Smith is still here and the squad love him so he will probably get it.
With Maloney being here for a year, 2014 could see him and Boyd share the role much like Lyon and King at Manly.

I'm sorry but having Mini as captain...let alone here is like Usain Bolt with a hamstring strain.
