I had a brief chat with him at the Members' BBQ thing, and damn - he's had a disgraceful run with serious injury.

He seemed optimistic that he'd by alright for round 1 (although truth be told, I wasn't so sure seeing the intensity the rest of the boys were training at while he sat there on his crutches). Perhaps that was his own drive/positive affirmation at play.

But I do hope he has an injury-free year and can crack the team. He seems like a decent guy and a handy player to boot.

Yes Salvo, I watched him quite a few times playing for Newtown and he was always one of their best players. He also plays with injury, like a lot do I suppose. He, I think, dislocated his wrist in the NSW Cup GF. He had to get that fixed before he could have his hips operated on. When I saw him come off in the GF I thought it must be serious because he hates to be replaced. He is very tough. Easts have a very strong group of players for 2013. What's all this about Smith and the txt messages? What happened between him and the players?

Indeed - he obviously couldn't operate crutches while his wrists were bung. Poor bastard.

I heard he has had both hips operated on in Melbourne and is out for four months. He had the op in November. The new coach will really like Jack's attitude to the team, training, the whole lot. Jack is an excellent player and may be he will get a fair go in '13 under the new caoch.
