I feel there's guys from other clubs you can sign because they're standup blokes with lives outside club footy (e.g. Cronk, SBW, Keary...etc) and then there's guys like NAS / Burgess / Mam...etc who simply don't fit within the culture.
IMO it'd be like signing Cheese. Great in theory but all his runs will be soft because there's no RWB in his DNA. He'd probably also end up getting injured / suspended long-term or establishing an intimate relationship with his wheelie bin. Either way he'd do anything within his power to get paid $$$ for the least effort possible. Not saying he's that sorta guy... just don't think he's programmed to respect our colours.
And Gus is gradually growing into a bit of an enforcer role too.
'Enforcers' in the old fashioned sense are dying out by design. They simply get penalised out of the game.
Sure it's important to have them, but you need to mitigate the risk.
Whyte does his job better than anyone else in our pack these days. And he basically has a smile on his face when doing it.
Players like Walsh, Cleary, Dearden win you comps and origin series but without your middles dominating the ruck they can't shine and play off the front foot. Look at the Knights for example. Ponga on $1.2 mill has looked bog average playing behind a pack that is always dominated! Waste of money and no good for Ponga's development.
With that said and if I was building a team, I'd start with my pack and the pigs would be the priority! Key to the Panthers 4 peat imo was JFH and Leota then followed by N Cleary who was blessed to have a platform laid week in week out. Both those props definitely have a hard edge without the grubby side effects that cost teams games through poor discipline.
NAS may not be the answer however I still believe we need an enforcer/leader style player like JWH. Whyte is a gun that should focus on his development and not be burdened by the responsibilities that come with the leadership role. His time will eventually come!

I agree with you on the importance of a dominant pack.
However JFH & Leota are not like JWH. They have a hard edge sure, but are not what I would call 'enforcers'. Closest thing to that for the Cats is perhaps Liam Martin.
It may be sacrelige to say this, but in my opinion Collins really needs to have a shit hot 2026.
In my opinion, he has become a weak link in our pack. Despite the Origin jersey, he is comfortably not in the top 10 props in the comp.
He is not in the top 50 in the comp for post contact meters for 2025, which is something you really need from a middle (Whyte ranks 3rd in the comp for comparison)
Perhaps its the recovery from previous injury which is why.
I like him as a Rooster stalwart, but he fills me with very little enthusiasm these days and I'm sure oppositions are not quaking in their boots at the sight of Collins lumbering up.

Leota and JFH are enforcers. They bashed the opposition packs into submission week after week through power and aggression. Their message was clear if not arrogant that you'll need to bring something special if you wish to beat us. JWH had the same attitude! This lifts those around them and ads accountability to a pack. We have loads of talent however no one has stepped up to fill the JWH void.

Not in the same post code as JWH
Those 2 dont get sent off for doing beautiful grubby dirty stuff like our man.
Opposition forwards arent sh!tting themselves looking over their shoulder hoping they dont get a dirty whacked like JWH use to do.
JWH is the last of the true enforcer.

The big dog was only sent off once and binned 9 times - 316 NRL games.
Latrell Mitchell binned 11 times - 182 NRL games.
Victor Radley binned 10 times - 161 NRL games.
The media made JWH look like a thug when in fact his record isn't all that bad when you consider how many games he played. Mitchell is already into sin bin double digits and will most likely eclipse 20 sin bins by the time he retires.

That’s amazing

jwh role was to be on the edge and play hard

Can we get him back?
PLEASE
he is a dirty grub & I love him.

I really really really wish Mitchell was not such a childish, arrogant sook of a human.
It's impossible to have him back now I would think. Robbo really took care of him, as did his teammates, but Mitchell felt entitled to more & more. Ego got way out of control.
I wonder what could have been without tossers like Mundine constantly in his ear.
I swear he was not like that when he debuted with us.
