  • The official end of Brandon Smith

He will never play in the NRL again.

The drug stuff in itself will play some part in it. But his discussion of betting odds and revealing team selection information when talking about placing bets? There is no coming back from that.

For those who saw it, he did almost score the first try in that game, you could see he was on his toes taking the penalty 10m out, and he went pretty close, it was only a second tackle that stopped him half a metre out! If you watch that 15 second period prior to and after the penalty in hindsight, you could see it was on his mind.

This mindless fool who has been given so many chances, but who can play.

If he was still at the Roosters, I’d 100% agree with you. Now that he’s at the Shit Stain, I’m not so sure.

He will be fine and get less games than Radley does.

Pretty appropriate really. Souffs don't have a reputation to protect.

If he was a jockey he'd be in big trouble.

I personally don't believe he should be banned from playing in the NRL for what he's done. A suspension and fine would suffice.

I can't believe this isn't a bigger controversy than it is.

The integrity of the game is something us naive fans can only wring our hands and cry about.

But the integrity of the betting markets is where the rubber hits the road for the NRL.

The NRL is essentially racing under PVL.

We're a rolled gold wagering sport. Properly punt powered.

                    That's V'Landy's business model.

Wagering is what's behind his push into the US. It's not about league per se, it's about the gambling potential in it.

Players manipulating the market is serious.

                      100%

Sportsbet are a major partner of the NRL.

The NRL made $50 plus mill from the betting industry last year. There is no way they would jeopardise that revenue stream or have it undermined!

                      The Cheese is gone imo.

Minimum 2 years if not a life ban - and then there is the supply charge which as a stand alone offence isn't career ending however add the 2 together and you're toast.

Its the way it is Bansia
Television contracts betting agent contracts radio contracts & who ever else the NRL has contracts with is cool, its why clubs get given 13 million dollars a year & players earn on average IMO at least 300k per season, its high end tough arse aggressive football that is a major major sport on the East coast of Australia that millions of people watch.
What model of running the NRL do you want the NRL to take?

His penalty won't be up to Souths, it'll be up to the integrity unit. Even if he's found not guilty by the court who have a high threshold of proof in terms of proving a charge, the text messages regarding the betting are undeniable. He has provided private team selection information to a member of the public, and discussed placing bets based on that information.

                          He's finished.

this kind of offence is pretty much a two year minimum ban in other sports

The court case is still ongoing though, and in reality it's circumstantial evidence at best until tested in court.

No evidence that Brandon was trying to manufacture/manipulate some event in a game that bets were placed on and not like, say the Ryan Tandy one.

I don't expect him to be deregistered now when seeing other info relating to these allegations, as how does the NRL justify it when you consider the Mam case, which was far more serious and Mam was somehow given a lighter sentence by the courts despite what he did.
