We have a problem that we have recruited a lot of great young players over a short time frame. Most SG Ball players are only a few years from being possible top 30 players, but we have a lot of players only 2 to 3 years older ahead of them, including most of our NRL debutants. For example, Tyson Walker has his brother, Savala, Sandon, Elliott, Foley and Rodwell ahead of him. Similarly we have a lot of middle and edge forwards as well as hookers. We might be a bit short for outside backs and fullbacks.

Unfortunately having clubs chasing your young talent is good signs of a strong development pathways system, although I wouldn’t be too worried we still have a lot of the best talent left on our books.

      If I had to rate the top 15 prospects from SG ball this year off the top of my head it would go;

      1. Toby Rodwell
      2. Darcy Smith
      3. Itula Seve
      4. Rex Baasinghthwaighte
      5. Jax Allen
      6. James Finegan
      7. Phillip Lavakeiaho (left for Manly)
      8. Kanaan Magele
      9. Jackson Stewart
      10. Lui Lee
      11. Lachlan Dooner
      12. Eddy Cayless
      13. Mikey Nassar (left for Bulldogs)
      14. Tyson Walker (left for Cowboys)
      15. EJ Mahu-Delamere
      16. Kynan Toevai

*I’ve probably forgotten one or two.

With all due respect to Tyson Walker it was his first year in SG Ball and he's definitely a dominant half so in the right set up he may shine more but with Charlie Webb and Carter Mareko coming through I can understand why maybe he and the club didn't see a clear path for him. If we manage to keep Carter Mareko who’s currently tearing up the national schoolboys comp then we’ll be very well served for halves in SG Ball next year.

Cohen Dittman only really got used when when we had mass injuries in the outside backs. Baxter Warner even less so, reporting he was the centre in the winning SG Ball team is wildly off, he was behind Jackson Stewart, Lachlan Dooner, William Pappas, Lui Lee & Brooklyn Heath in selections.

Mikey Nassar was signed as a fullback but when Rex went down early in the season he struggled at fullback and Jackson Stewart ended up going back there. Nassar ended up having a really solid season on the wing, strong carrier and good finisher. It will be interesting to see how he continues to develop as a winger.

Phillip Lavakeiaho is a real raw talent and has probably the highest ceiling of the forwards but he also struggled with the defensive workload at times. He is an absolute unit and always the hardest bloke to tackle in the comp but his minutes did get reduced and he did end up going back to the bench as the season went on, I assume because of his defensive short comings. He’ll either be an absolute beast or he’s going to really struggle with the defensive demands of first grade. High risk, high reward type prospect.

Then the season after that "bred not bought" they went on a massive spending spree signing Kimmorley, Stagg, Hannant, Ennins, Josh Morris, Goodwin, Michael Hodgson, Eastwood

            Thanks for the summary.

Everytime i've seen Itula Seve he has performed solidly, i i hope both him and his brother progress through to the NRL in the next few seasons

I have seen what Toby Rodwell can do in his age group, but has yet to stand out against men but obviously the talent is there - i'd say he is still a year or 2 off NRL and i think the club agrees (hence DCE)

I hope we keep Dooner and Jax Allen, although both have a few guys still young in front of them at NRL level

It doesn't surprise me that we are losing a high number from a winning team when you consider how many players have come through the academy. Gould might have to run three reserve grade teams in order to fit them all in.

good to hear we're not losing the cream of the crop.
no way are you going to keep every player from every under age team. the fact that some players are being snapped up by other clubs makes signing for the roosters an attractive proposition for new young players. 'sign for the roosters and your chances of becoming an nrl player will improve'. hopefully we will continue to keep the best

I can't wait until Moses takes over the Dogs and destroys it like he has the Cowboys, Knights, Manly & Tigers.....
Gus with his ego probably thinks he can keep him in check
