Sandon and Hugo have played a handful of games together in NRL so not sure how you can evaluate their combo to Cleary and Luai - probably no other halves combo will win 4 comps in a row in the modern game if that's your ceiling in rating halves combo's.

    Anyway

However, Mal Meninga believes there is another area of their game that is separating the pair from other young halves in the NRL.

“Their work ethic is great, but what I like about them and certainly Hugo is his calmness and his composure, particularly under pressure to get those kicks away,” Meninga said.

“That’s a really good trait to have and obviously his composure is excellent.”

Walters noted the pair have a long history of playing together in the juniors and have a good rapport on and off the field.

“You can see there is a good energy between them as well as a halves combination,” Walters said.

“They obviously like playing with each other. They played a lot of junior football together and now they are getting the opportunity together in first grade.

Where does it say in that article that Mal is very keen to sign them both?

That article is in relation to them being on the commentary panel in the studio and after the game they were asked to make comment. Of course he and Walter’s were going to be complimentary as they had just beaten the sharks and played well but no where does it say Mal is keen to sign them

The article is dated May 26th 2025 when Meninga was a so called commentator - Meninga was appointed Bears Coach on June 6th - Do you honestly think he would not be interested in signing both now that he has been confirmed as Bears Coach.

Any coach would be looking at Hugo and Sandon as a halves combo to build a team around especially new teams such as the Bears.

Both Hugo and Sandon are able to negotiate with other clubs from November 1 2025 - both off contract in 2026 - Perth Bears admitted to the NRL comp in 2027

Wake up of course they would be considered as Bears signings.

Cronk rates both Hugo and Sandon highly as well - Meninga will be asking plenty of his QLD mates about what players to sign for various positions in assembling the Bears Squad for 2027 and beyond.

Cooper Cronk believes the key to the pair’s success is their drive to work hard.

“They are two good kids and all you want in young players, whether it is a front-rower or a half or a fullback is work ethic,” Cronk said.

“They come in and they get taught a lot of things pretty quickly and you just want to see people work harder than the average and then they will fast-track"

Why would the Bears pursue Sandon and Savala when they could sign the likes of Jahrome Hughes, Luke Metcalf, Chanel Harris-Tavita, Tyran Wishart, Toby Sexton (Possibly) and others? Even if he wanted young developmental option players I'd say that the likes of Jamie Humphreys, Jack Cole and others would get the nod before our guys. Again, Sandon Smith is Super League standard at best and Hugo is under 10 matches into his career, the Bears would be paying a lot more attention to the players just mentioned compared to Hugo and Sandon.

Savala will stay and Sandon Smith will be off to the Huddersfield Giants.

            • Gee whiz out for 9 months due back for us this week and he sustains another injury will be lucky to get him for 8 or so games our finals hopes may well have died with this latest setback.

Knights Cowboys Tigers Dragons we should get three of those which will have us 8 wins 8 losses if not we’re done for this season, we then have Sharks Storm twice Manly bulldogs phins Souffs and Parra.

Cannot afford to drop any of these next 4 weeks.

Mmm. All of what you have just said is pure speculation on your behalf with no direct proof or documented evidence. You can’t say “Meninga is said to be very keen to sign both Sandon and Hugo since being announced as the Bears coach” as if it was actually said or reported on and then when called out for having no evidence then say “do you honestly think he would not be interested” as if this is gospel and accurate.

I never said Mal wouldn’t be interested,
I asked when did Mal make those statements and that the article that you posted had no proof. Stop putting words in my mouth and go back and read my response.
Im sure Mal is interested just like he’s interested in a lot of players. He will probably make a play at one of them but he hasn’t come out and declared that like you insinuated.

                Wake up.

Might be a blessing in disguise and give his knee an extra few weeks. Still gutting though, I was excited to see him
                  back this week.

                    • Huge blow,

With our next 4 weeks being Knights - Cowboys - Bye - Tigers.

I was quietly hopeful we might pick up the full 8pts with Sammy back on deck.

4 weeks is also best case scenario.

                      • Did Sandon accidentally stomp on Walker's hand?

                        • Sandon and potentially Dom back in our colours

This is like a recurring nightmare.

We'll be sweet. 8 pts still very gettable.

I agree, we still have the team to compete with those teams dispite Sam not being there.

                              • We are too inconsistent for any games to be a guarantee win even lesser opponents.

Most of our games have largely been won or lost off the back of the performances from our halves.

Hoping they stand tall over the next few weeks to put us in a good ladder position entering into the pointy end of the season.
