Phil Rothfield reveals rugby union convert Mark Nawaqanitawase is a far better player than the man he replaced at the same stage of his career in the Sydney Roosters backline – the Wallabies’ $5 million man Joseph Aukuso-Suaalii.

I've never thought that Suaalii was that good. Billy Smith is twice the player! As for Marky Mark, he is a great athlete however it's too early to say that he is a great RL player.
The most important thing to me as a fan is that they give 100% when they wear our colours and run out to plays. Suaalii always gave 100%. Manu stopped giving 100% imo. Dom Young is a cat, hates contact therefore never gives 100% and why I'd like him gone. Billy Smith has the heart of a Lion and always gives 110%. Marky Mark also gives 100%.
Considering their relative ages - Mark 24 is 3 years older than Joe, I don't think it's a fair comparison.
For those who don't watch Super Rugby, Joe has been killing it playing fullback for the Waratahs and the media is now speculating he may even play their rather than outside center for the Wallabies against the Lions.
Statistics reveal rugby union convert Mark Nawaqanitawase is a far better player than the man he replaced at the same stage of his career in Sydney Roosters’ backline – the Wallabies’ $5m man Joseph Aukuso-Suaalii.
Nawaqanitawase has clearly had more impact than Suaalii in a statistical comparison after their first eight games in the Roosters jersey.
The convert has made nine line breaks to Suaalii’s one, 30 tackle busts to Suaalii’s 12, scored six tries to Suaalii’s two and also has run more metres on Code Sports Stats.
And he’s getting paid about a third of the money Rugby Australia is giving Suaalii.
Admittedly, Suaalii was only 17 when he made his debut but the stats don’t lie.
The Roosters have dodged a bullet by refusing to get involved in a cross-code bidding war with rugby union as Nawaqanitawase, 24, emerges as such an outstanding winger, centre or fullback and a future State of Origin player.
We’re not sure it will happen this year but there’s no question he could play Origin with more experience, especially in defence, in future years.
Meanwhile, Suaalii is playing for the Waratahs who were flogged by the Brumbies on Saturday night and have their finals hopes hanging by a thread.
Nawaqanitawase has been a smash-hit success for the Roosters.
Few outside backs in the game have such all-round skills: he has speed, strength, aerial skill, a beautiful passing game and he’s a player who knows how to find the tryline.
Now it’s a matter for the Roosters to lock him down long term. Nawaqanitawase is one of several outstanding young Roosters players who are coming off contract at the end of next season and are free to chat to rival clubs from November.
We’re talking about the likes of Blake Steep, Hugo Savala, Naufahu Whyte, Sandon Smith and Siua Wong.
It’s a dangerous position to be in when new clubs WA Bears and PNG start looking to fill their 30-man rosters.
The Roosters have emerged in recent weeks from what was supposed to be a rebuilding year into a definite finals contender.
They were far too strong for the Dolphins on Friday night and have now won three of their past four games.
The fans are now asking why they would even entertain signing Manly Sea Eagles veteran Daly Cherry-Evans, who turns 37 next year.
They have Sam Walker to return while Smith and Savala have been playing so confidently and so well.
The Roosters also have an outstanding young halfback coming through in Toby Rodwell, who was man of the match in the Roosters’ SG Ball (under-19s) grand final win over Parramatta on Saturday.
Toby is young but what a player we have coming through..I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a run next year.Might even get one this year if we have injuries.Did alright in our trial match.

Just my opinion.
I agree
suaali was genetically gifted however seemed to love to run at bodies nearly turning into an edge backrower
he seemed to try and be physical which was so annoying instead of using a step and fend
allready Marky M, Billy smith and also toia have added so much stability in defence then Manu and suaali and a shit load more in attack
and on half the money
Makes you wonder why Aus rugby is where it is
Roosters signed Marky M for $500k despite rugby Aus offering $600k - absolute bargain
rugby Aus signed Suaali for $1.5m and we had him on $800k which he was overpaid at the time on potential
pretty easy who got the win
Marky is a better than Joe in both attack and defence; he just seems to have better awareness of what’s happening around him. Joe could kick goals, don’t know if Marky can. They both give 100% every time they lace a boot. I wonder if Marky has it in him to play fullback post-Teddy?
I agree with Bates that Billy (when fit) is our best in the backline. If he stays fit, that bloke will play for NSW and Australia. Toia isn’t far behind. I think both will surpass Joey Manu, who would often be lazy and was a pretty poor defender in comparison.
It’s hard to believe that not so long ago we were struggling to field even an average backline; now look at the talent we have. I’m so glad the club decided to stick with both Billy and Rob through all of their injuries. Our future is bright.

Toia has it in spades. He is the epitome of the worlds best strike centre in the making!
I'm falling in love with these young lads who play with such great spirit. They are talented, confident yet humble young men! You can see the respect they have for the jersey, club, coach and senior players.
I truly believe that this season is the start of something very special! I'm starting to understand why certain players were moved on. I'm also proud of Robbo for dropping Chad and Dom for the betterment of the team. This wouldn't have been easy!

I remember seeing Toia play GPS rugby and he was a freak
got injured came back and killed it first few nsw cup games against men post acl
did acl again came back late last year and killed it again
looks fit, great tackle technique and his ability to step inside and outside plus get the ball away with flick passes is better to see then Manu
also has more pace then Manu
and Billy smith does both so well! Billy would have easily been left centre over suaali last year if not for injuries

I can see a few of our next larger upgrades coming through the backline
Marky M, Billy smith and toia
atm Marky on $500k and others or $250-300k
for what they are delivering this year they are all playing like they are worth $800k
