The argument is who played worse. Out of the two of them, my stance is that Sandon still looked to run the ball and tried to be creative. That failed on most occassions, but I'll take that over a bloke who is offering absolutely nothing. I'm not overstating Sandon's previous performances this year at all, I just think Chad was worse which is why he was dropped. Also, don't get it twisted; call it a fluke or whatever you like, but Sandon played a game last week that Chad is absolutely incapable of playing - or anything close to it.
I guess it comes down to personal opinion, personally I feel outside of the game with Penrith that Chad played better than Sandon but it was moreso because Townsend wasn't actively hurting us whilst Sandon was. I do agree that Townsend could not have done what Sandon did on ANZAC Day which is probably why the coaching staff picked Sandon over him. Sandon in 2025 on his best day is better than Townsend but is Sandon going to remain consistent? We'll see tomorrow.

    • Truth is I was all in on DCE but that was a kneejerk reaction.

Def changed my thinking and reckon stick with SS and Savala until Walker is back and we either have an SS/Sammy combo of Savala/Sammy

Reckon we never see what SS could do cause he was lumbered with Chad

Fair play - we reached some common ground.
I'm sure we both hope Sandon kills it tomorrow, and whether we sign DCE or not, in a few years we'll be able to make a compelling case as to why that was or wasn't the correct decision in hindsight.

          • 100% Agree with Gus Gould

However, speaking on Wide World of Sports' Six Tackles With Gus, the former Roosters coach pointed out the impact it could have on Sam Walker and Sandon Smith.

"I know there's been a lot of rumours and a lot of interest in Daly Cherry-Evans from the Roosters ... I can't understand that," Gould said.

"They've got Sam Walker to come back, and they've got this young fella, Sandon Smith, who I've really rated for a long time, he's a great kid and getting better. His performance on Anzac Day was extraordinary and they've still got Sam Walker to come back yet.

"If they intended on playing Daly Cherry-Evans and Sam Walker in the same team, one of them is going to have to change their role. One of them is going to have to play five-eighth and play left - and it's not going be Daly Cherry-Evans.

"I think it inhibits Sam Walker's development as a game-managing halfback for a couple of years while he hands the reins over to Daly Cherry-Evans. They might be able to say, Daly can teach him the ropes ... but I honestly don't get it.

"I don't see why the Roosters need Daly Cherry-Evans. Nothing against Daly Cherry-Evans, you know what I think of him. He's an astonishing player and he's still in great form, but Sandon Smith and Sam Walker are surely their long-term combination.

"The sooner they get playing together the better. That's my take on it."

Walker has been sidelined since the back-end of the 2024 campaign, with Smith having played alongside both Chad Townsend and Hugo Savala this year.

Gould believes the early development shown by local junior Savala in the top grade, as well as the emergence of Toby Rodwell beneath would hold the Chooks in good stead.

"Hugo improves by the week, he's always a handy backstop for both of them," he said.

"They've got some brilliant young halves coming through and young fellas in the lower grades that I think have got great potential. I think they're well served in that area.

"They're a club that always like bright, shiny things. They love their shiny toys and they love having the best around. And I guess when Daly Cherry-Evans comes on the market, it's more about no one else having him. They don't want anyone else to have them.

"But I don't see it. I don't see why they need him. I really don't … perhaps they think their best chance of winning games for their fans and their sponsors is to bring in Daly Cherry-Evans, who's a proven game winner.

"But, you know, it's going to be a hard call on the other boys."

            • I thought last week's effort from Sandon Smith was career defining. We don't need DCE.

What about the times he played alongside Luke Keary and Sam Walker? Or the times both Keary and Walker played and he played off the bench?

                  Can he back it up?

                  His confidence should be sky-high!

I remember him playing rather well beside Walker against Souths last year. IIRC he had a number of try assists in that game. I'm not sure how relevant his appearances off at the bench at hooker are to his development as a half. All the experts say that it takes a minimum 50 games for a young half to begin playing consistently well. I'm sure they mean 50 games as a starting half. The other games don't count for much in that regard.

I don't recall the game where he played well against Souths but if he did then he dominated a team that ran 2nd last.in 2024 with a team that finished third, it seems less impressive that way. As for his appearances at hooker, they don't relate to his development as a half but they do as a first grader and he was rarely impressive in that spot also.

50 games? I'll take your word on that's what the experts say but do we have that long? Sandon has maybe played 15 games as a starting half, what are we going to do? Let DCE go, let Hugo go, let Rodwell and Foley go in hopes that come Round 1 2027 that Sandon Smith will finally be ready to go and consistently play well?

For what it's worth Nathan Cleary was the top point scorer in the NRL before his 50th game, Lachlan Galvin has already shown how much potential he has well before 50 games, Luai had won a minor prem and played in a grand final before 50 games, Nicho Hynes won a comp and a minor premiership before 50 games, Dearden had played Origin before his 50th game and I'm sure there are many more who did big things before 50 games.

                      • If DCE cost us Walker or Rodwell its a no

Obviously my thoughts on Sandon are clear....and only my opinion

He slayed it against the Dragons, no doubt....but how many games this year do you give him a pass mark? Can Sandon and Walker work together with zero long kicking game ??

For 2 years are we a better team with DCE & Walker vs Smith/Savala & Walker ? For me, this question only has 1 answer

After that, we can look at Rodwell & Walker unless King Salvo has his eyes on some 11 year old from Erina

Looking.forward to seeing what Sandon offers up the next 4-6 weeks after being hailed as the saviour against a bog average Saints team

                        • Sport Confidential: Roosters star rolls out DCE welcome mat; Suncorp Stadium in immaculate condition Daly Cherry-Evans has been widely tipped to join the Roosters, and the club’s No.1 playmaker has welcomed his fellow Queenslander’s potential move to Bondi.

Sydney Roosters superstar Sam Walker has dismissed suggestions that his development could be impeded if Daly Cherry-Evans arrives at the club, insisting instead that the Queensland captain can help make him a better player. Cherry-Evans has been widely tipped to join the Roosters, prompting Bulldogs head of football Phil Gould to claim that his arrival could hamper Walker’s development as a game-managing half. It is the second time Gould has made the claim - he said the same thing a few weeks ago when Cherry-Evans initially announced he was leaving Manly at the end of the season.

Walker has spent time in Queensland camp alongside Cherry-Evans and insists he can learn much from the Sea Eagles skipper. “I think I know I can adapt to other footballers and like I said …. you never, ever turn your back on one of Queensland’s great footballers to come to our club,” Walker said. “It’s obviously something that would be really exciting and something that us as a club would welcome with open arms. “He’s obviously a great footballer and I’ve been in a Queensland camp with him before.

He’s a great leader as well. “Any chance you get to welcome someone of his caliber into a footy side, it would be exciting for myself. “For myself personally, to sort of sit back and be able to watch the way he talks to the team and watch the way he prepares himself - he’s obviously the ultimate professional to play for as long as he has. “He’s definitely done something right with his body. For me to be able to watch that and pick up little things that he does was a really good learning curve for myself.”

Walker is still about five weeks away from making his return from a knee injury, having missed the start of the season after undergoing surgery late last year. In his absence, Sandon Smith produced arguably his best performance in a Roosters jersey on Anzac Day against St George Illawarra. “That’s the way we know he can play,” Walker said. “Sometimes you just need those games. Like I remember last year … I was up and down at the start of the year and then got through an Anzac game and had a really good game, and it sort of set me up for a really good year last year. “I’m pretty confident that it’ll do the sort of a similar thing to Sando. It’ll give him a lot of confidence going into this week and hopefully the season ahead.”

                            • The problem with Walker and Smith together is that neither have a long kicking game. Both are also quiet small and can be targeted in defence. Savala compliments Smith now because he covers the long kicking game and has a bigger body too. Walker needs a partner that can kick long, DCE ticks this box and also take some pressure off him from organising duties, as he likes to play off the cuff a fair bit. Again DCE would allow this to happen.

As good as Smith has shown he can be, I think he is more a 6 that could partner DCE, rather than be the right 6 next to Walker. I could see Smith turning into a very good dummy half, but we have Robson coming in. For the Roosters, they would probably want Smith to be a potential super sub or depth cover in case Walker was to go down again. Whether this suits Smith, I don't know and he could probably get a start somewhere at 6 to partner an organising half.
