  • My End of Season Player Ratings

Discuss, analyse, criticise. It’s just my opinion.

James Tedesco - Without doubt the most consistent fullback in the game this year. Had a hand in many tries and was as involved as ever. Didn’t allow the disappointment of losing his origin spot and captaincy to effect his game. Had an impact in every game. Rating: 10/10.

Daniel Tupou - Seems to get better with age. No winger carries the ball better from their own end than Toops. Still owns the air and scored more tries in a season than ever before. Rating 9/10.

Joseph Suaalii - Not the fastest or most skilful centre but plays the game hard and is a competent goal kicker. A shame we won’t get to witness further development. Rating: 7.5/10.

Joseph Manu - Was a bit inconsistent throughout the year. You can’t star in every game but it would have been nice to see him being more consistent. His ‘defence’ certainly won’t be missed. Rating: 7/10.

Dom Young - His tally of tries will tell you he’s had a great season. I think he’s been average at best. Is not too reliable in the handling department and often gets pushed back running from our own end. Lots of sideway runs that rarely amounted to anything. He’s young and will get better and needs to watch how Toops does it and learn to fight in the tackle. Would have been good to see him in space more often but it rarely seemed to happen. Rating: 6/10

Luke Keary - Some had him retired a couple of years ago. The time is now right. No longer has the speed he use to but still had the balls to take on the line despite his history of head knocks. 6.5/10

Sam Walker - Was great to see the improvement in his game and in his on field leadership. Can’t imagine how good he will be in 3 years time. His unpredictability makes him great to watch and his short kicking game is excellent. Rating: 8.5/10.

JWH - Led from the front as always. Heart and soul of the team. A shame we didn’t get to see him too often in his final year. Leaving at the right time. Rating: 7/10.

Brandon Smith - His good games were few and far between. Played limited minutes and clearly struggles with the pace of the game. Takes up a good chunk of cap but we don’t get what we pay for. Rating 5/10.

Lindsay Collins - Set the bar extremely high last season but this season has failed to live up to expectations. He seems to get smashed way too easily and too often for a man of his size. Doesn’t bend the line as often as he should seeing he’s an origin and Australian front rower. Can’t fault his effort, always gives his all. Rating: 7/10.

Angus Crichton - Was the most dominant forward in the competition. Great to see him progress so well after starting the year in reserves. Rating 9.5/10.

Sitili Tupouniua - Some energetic performances and is great when the team is going well but not so good in the difficult games. Defence is average and his hands aren’t great either. Rating: 6.5/10.

Connor Watson - Was killing it as a running forward and did very well when forced to move back to nine. A shame for him as he has so much more impact as a runner. Known as a specialist utility or Number 14 but managed to force his way into the starting side when we were at full strength. He keeps getting better. Rating: 9/10.

Victor Radley - He’s a real leader for us on field and seems to have matured a bit with his discipline. Tough man who always tries his best. Rating: 7.5/10.

Nat Butcher: He’s just there to tackle and he does that pretty well. 6.5/10.

Spencer Leniu: Great energy off the bench but seems to have much less impact as a starting player. Hopefully he can develop into this roll as he will need to. Love his controlled aggression and can’t wait to see him get even better. Rating: 7.5/10.

Terrell May - Had a fantastic breakthrough season last year so expectations from him this season were big. His stats will show he had a really good year but I don’t see too much improvement this year compared to last. He’s got good hands and barely misses a tackle. Should be our starting front rower next season. Rating: 7.5/10.

Naufahu Whyte - would have liked to have seen a little more of him. Runs hard and has good footwork at the line. He’s aggressive too. Rating: 6.5/10.

Siua Wong - Has been earmarked as a future superstar but went backwards after his debut season last year. Was hooked in Round 2 and never really recovered. Rating: 5/10.

    Solid rating as individuals.

    As a team I give them 4.
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.

I agree with your ratings except I can’t have leniu and May on same level. May outperformed him in consistency and efficiency.

James Tedesco - Without doubt the most consistent fullback in the game this year. Had a hand in many tries and was as involved as ever. Didn’t allow the disappointment of losing his origin spot and captaincy to effect his game. Had an impact in every game. Rating: 10/10. 9.5, would have been a 10 if he could be more selective with the no look bat-on passes to nobody.

Daniel Tupou - Seems to get better with age. No winger carries the ball better from their own end than Toops. Still owns the air and scored more tries in a season than ever before. Rating 9/10. 8.0 good year for Toups but still has a few errors in him and a bad defensive read on occasion.

Joseph Suaalii - Not the fastest or most skilful centre but plays the game hard and is a competent goal kicker. A shame we won’t get to witness further development. Rating: 7.5/10. 8.0, grew throughout the year into our most effective centre. Great goal kicking. Always a huge effort.

Joseph Manu - Was a bit inconsistent throughout the year. You can’t star in every game but it would have been nice to see him being more consistent. His ‘defence’ certainly won’t be missed. Rating: 7/10. 6.0 his worst year, lacking impact, quite ordinary defence and seemingly lazy/disinterested.

Rating: 6/10 6.0, agree

Luke Keary - Some had him retired a couple of years ago. The time is now right. No longer has the speed he use to but still had the balls to take on the line despite his history of head knocks. 6.5/10 5.0, poor defence, no long kicking game, lacked pace and creativity, no organisation skill. Penrith and Melb took advantage of his weaknesses.

Sam Walker - Was great to see the improvement in his game and in his on field leadership. Can’t imagine how good he will be in 3 years time. His unpredictability makes him great to watch and his short kicking game is excellent. Rating: 8.5/10. 8.0 but has the potential to get to 10.0; hope it’s with us.

JWH - Led from the front as always. Heart and soul of the team. A shame we didn’t get to see him too often in his final year. Leaving at the right time. Rating: 7/10. 6.5, too much time suspended or in the bin. Probably an 8.0 when he plays.

Brandon Smith - His good games were few and far between. Played limited minutes and clearly struggles with the pace of the game. Takes up a good chunk of cap but we don’t get what we pay for. Rating 5/10. 7.5, I thought he played quite well when he wasn’t injured. I think his body language makes it look like he’s more gassed than he really is. His pay is irrelevant to his performance and I reckon we missed him in the finals.

Rating: 7/10. 7.0 agree. He lacks impact with the ball but does a lot of the 1%ers. It’s almost like he’s playing 5 kg underweight.

Angus Crichton - Was the most dominant forward in the competition. Great to see him progress so well after starting the year in reserves. Rating 9.5/10. 8.0, I would have had him at 9.5 before the finals series.

Sitili Tupouniua - Some energetic performances and is great when the team is going well but not so good in the difficult games. Defence is average and his hands aren’t great either. Rating: 6.5/10.6.5 agreed

Overall probably 7.5, 6 as a hooker, 7 as a lock, 8.5 as a bench utility

Victor Radley - He’s a real leader for us on field and seems to have matured a bit with his discipline. Tough man who always tries his best. Rating: 7.5/10. 8.0

Nat Butcher: He’s just there to tackle and he does that pretty well. 6.5/10. 6.5 agreed

Spencer Leniu: Great energy off the bench but seems to have much less impact as a starting player. Hopefully he can develop into this roll as he will need to. Love his controlled aggression and can’t wait to see him get even better. Rating: 7.5/10. 7.0 needs to improved his defence close to the line

Terrell May - Had a fantastic breakthrough season last year so expectations from him this season were big. His stats will show he had a really good year but I don’t see too much improvement this year compared to last. He’s got good hands and barely misses a tackle. Should be our starting front rower next season. Rating: 7.5/10. 8.0 usually our best forward metre eater.

Naufahu Whyte - would have liked to have seen a little more of him. Runs hard and has good footwork at the line. He’s aggressive too. Rating: 6.5/10. 7.0 he needs more game time at 13. Too much chopping and changing from the coach.

Siua Wong - Has been earmarked as a future superstar but went backwards after his debut season last year. Was hooked in Round 2 and never really recovered. Rating: 5/10. 7.0 the games he played he was pretty good, so I’m not sure what happened there to get so little game time yet Nat Butcher is there week in, week out. He needs a big off season.

            - Teddy has his best season in years with tries, try assists, tackle breaks and line breaks close to perfect - 9.5
            - young was better then that scored 20 tries and missed 5 or so games and with a couple of Manu passes would have easily topped the try scores list - made plenty of tackle breaks as well maybe - 8
            - Suaali wasn’t any better then Manu only had a good last month would have been a 6 but maybe 7
other then that rest seems fair maybe cheese an extra mark up by 1 and Gus fell off a little at the end to maybe 8 overall

Tedesco was the player of the year closely followed by Walker , Watson , Crichton and Toops

You need players ratings to be 7 and above - some of the interchange players may not achieve that rating because of limited minutes they may play i.e Sandon Smith

Collins , Manu and Lenui's form dropped off during the mid to latter part of the season for reasons unknown - sure Manu had the hand injury but he went from best centre to back in the pack.- Needed more from Collins and Leniu both SOO players. Brandon Smith needs to be fitter to play the required minutes expected of a dummy half - if seen as an impact player then dummy half is not his role.

Be interesting to see how Whyte and Wong go in 2025 especially with starting 13 spots in the pack up for grabs - Whyte started strong but faded and Wong never really got going although his NSW Cup running metres and minutes played were outstanding when playing mostly prop.
              • Tedesco - 9
              • Toops - 8
              • Suaalii - 7
              • Pauga - 6
              • Manu - 6
              • Young - 7
              • Keary - 7
              • Walker - 8
              • Collins - 6
              • Brandon Smith - 5
              • JWH - 7
              • Leniu - 6
              • Crichton - 8

                King. N Butcher 7 - debatable. I know you are a fan.

Yep Brandon S a 5. If he is on reportably $800,000 a season - he needs to be moved on, or not resigned.

Fair assessment 13. Mind you most players form was up and down throughout the season.

                  My top 3

                  1) Teddy
                  2) Walker
                  3) Gus

A bit raw but rather than individual number-based ratings I'm gonna group mine into categories...

Over-achievers = players who did way better than expected or simply continued to show they're top notch players who'll win you games
                    - Watson
                    - May
                    - Crichton
                    - Teddy
                    - Leniu
                    - Toops
                    - Walker

Average = performance was no better or worse than what you'd expect (and isn't top notch to start with)
                    - Young (defence + inability to play centre were a downer but he was a prolific try scorer who ripped in big time in attack)
                    - Rads (feels a little bit unfair as he's been ripping in but IMO he wasn't top-shelf)
                    - Sitili (though his last few games were pretty sweet)
                    - Whyte (showed potential... watch this space!)
                    - Sandon (also showed potential... watch this space!)

Under-achievers = not necessarily dropkicks (I don't think we had any) but players who coulda done better
                    - Cheese
                    - Sua'ali'i (though I liked his last game)
                    - Manu (controversial probably but IMO he had a quiet season)
                    - Collins (Aussie rep... I don't think he was shyte but one reputation I expect more leadership from him)
                    - JWH (played great but was suspended waaaay too much... love the guy but a lot of those suspensions were dumb)
                    - Keary (love the guy but lacks the POD value he used to offer)

                    ---

Probably left a few out there. Overall I think there were more high achievers than under-performers. Also nobody was bad. We came 3rd for a reason... we were consistently pretty good!!!

Where I'll flaw us is that I think that to beat Melbourne/Penrith we needed:
                    - Keary to play like it's the 2018 GF... CONSISTENTLY.
                    - JWH to get the dumb penalties outta his game.
                    - Collins to step up like May and Spencer did!!!
                    - Manu and Sua'ali'i to play like they care about their futures in the NRL.
                    - Cheese to start offering the POD that's made him notorious. He should be embarrassed that Watson's now made the Kanagroos squad as he's our marquee half whereas Watson was given a lifeline by Robbo and was like 'I will farkin rip in and do a solid to try and earn myself the utility role'... ends up playing for NSW and Australia!!!
                    - Butcher... I hope he improves.

                    ---

What excites me moving into 2025
                    - We will have less of a cluster fark of backs. Love Manu and Sua'ali'i but another part of me says 'riddance - neither of you were THAT great this year anyway'. Murphy? Yeah that never worked. Mark N looks like he's the goods and I'm happy seeing a group of backs who wanna be here...

                    - Our forward pack's one of the best in the comp. Gonna miss JWH but at the same time won't miss his penalties. IMO Collins wasn't bad he was just quiet... looking forward to him stepping up with Leniu, May, Whyte, Crichton...etc continuing on their current path.

                    - It's a clean slate for a lot of players who simply need to find their mojo. Like Watson and May this year... some just need to re-assess where they're at and possibly start working smarter rather than harder. This includes Robbo as I think our gameplan's gonna need to improve significantly. 2025 is a good time to step aside and work on that.

                    Why I'm worried about 2025
                    - Our halves situation! It's been problematic for ages with Cronk being the only complete solution. Walker's developing and Sandon's okay but we don't have a Cleary or a Hughes (both Dally M grade halves).

                    - Players maintaining the momentum. This includes guys like May and Leniu who over-performed this year but may suffer from a 2025 hang-over.

                    - Catching up with Penrith and Melbourne. I feel it's a bit like Australia's golden era with cricket where we didn't seem to lose a game. The divide between the top two and everybody else is significant. I just dunno how we're gonna bridge the gap. It just seems so frigging big!!! It'll be bridged eventually though...

I think one player that deserves special mention for doing his job when called upon is Michael Jennings. He obviously isnt the player he was in 2013 - and i think he would have been happy to play 1 game this year to hit his 300, but he ended up playing 9 games, and in none of those games did he let the team down. Every team needs players that just get the job done, and considering his age, and time away from the game - when called upon he played his role well

Collins deserved another chance to perform in the finals but was obviously rubbed out in the first minute by a thug who should have been dismissed.

Good write-up 13. I think you were a little generous with Manu, Kez, and Young in the backs. I would have expected more from them at the start of the season. Esp the Manu-Young combo. One would have expected it to be lethal.

In the forwards young blokes like May, Whyte and Wong probably get pass marks. However they need to really set up next season if they want to be in the 17 every week. It'll be interesting to see how Collins leads them around next year.

Sammy is a gun. Still not 100% sold on Sandon just yet. The glimpses are there but I feel like we need to be patient with their combo. Invest in them for a couple of seasons, and then around the 2027 mark, we can expect them to lead us to a premiership.
