Who will be Smiths projects at Easts??

It is obvious that Bennett's projects this year have been Weyman, Jeremy Smith and Jaimie Soward...

Smith has done amazing things with Gidley, Mullan, Zeb Taia, Junior Sau and Uate in my mind...

I am looking forward to seeing what he does with Warea-Hargreaves...

Will Smith and Pearce see eye to eye....??

Pearce will have to learn to pull his head in - and that's probably not a bad thing.

If I were Brian Smith the first player I'd make a project of is Jake Friend. If he can get the kid sorted out off field and give him a little free reign on field we could have a real classy young dummy half there.

All he needs is the discipline, structure and guidelines, which are Brian Smith's strengths.

After that he can spend some quality time with those two young rangas, Symonds and Jones, who could also be real assets to the Club if developed properly.

I want to see what Smith does with Pearce, Jones, Symonds, Friend, Williamson, Cherrington, Nuuausala and Warea-Hargreaves.

They are our main younguns, aside from Maliota, Blair and the Cordners.

here's a quote from noyce regarding smith in the SMH today http://www.smh.com.au/news/lhqnews/t...941827571.html

"I think in the back of your mind you are always thinking if this happens what is the solution, and once we had made the first decision, we identified what strengths we were looking for in the coach, and Brian ticked plenty of those boxes," Noyce said. "I'm not privy to what his situation was, I just became aware that he may be interested. The main thing is that he certainly expressed an interest in being involved in the club, especially as it's a foundation club. He's a traditionalist and he loves the game so he saw that as an important part."

The best thing about Brian Smith.................

            * He loves sticking it up Wayne Bennett coached teams
            * He would dearly love to pull Ray Hadley's head off and shit down his throat......and perhaps not in that order!

My apologies to the ladies or any pc "males" that are offended by my vulgar diatribe.

Everyone thinks that Smith is going to make sweeping changes to the club.

There was a newspaper report calling him a terminator.

He was interviewed this arvo and said that was complete BS. He said Newcastle's situation was completely different to the Roosters. They were a bunch of older players that had been around the club for a long time. The Roosters are a millions miles ahead in that sense in that we mainly have a very young roster. He said there may be a couple of changes but he is looking forward to working with a talented young group. Our oldest players for next year are Mini, Mase, Anasta and Sammy. I doubt he would get rid of any of those. I think everyone else is 23 or younger. Plus 95% of our roster are signed up. I can't see the sweeping changes.

I know one change he can make, possibly two - the Wollongong double-tag boxing team of Sa and SKD. These two are giving me the right royal shits. Either punt them or get into their heads to straighten them out once and for all.

We are holding a lot of shit in newtown and under 20s. I can see plenty of changes. Smith doesnt suffer young dumb fools.

Agreed. I typed exactly the same names and then cut it out. I think Earl may also have a problem. We need speedy and defensive wingers. If Mini remains fit, I see room for one other wing and I can't see SKD or Earl being those players.

Melon, cutting Newtown players is hardly going to impact the First Grade team but I am interested in who you would keep and get rid of from the Under 20s. I must admit I am surprised that Towers has not been signed yet but I may have old info there. Being a fullback, 5/8, halfback, I suppose he has a few in front of him but he would be a big loss especially with Mini in his final year or two and injury prone. Unless that rumour of Dugan has substance as well.

Im far from happy. I'm with Trew I dont think he is the answer. And when youre rock bottom the only way is up. The important fact isnt who will coach, it was always about getting rid of Fittler. He was the guy that was causing the damage. There was no example set and no respect. and his staff were just as bad. It could have been Smith, Kearney, McGuire, or Hagan....it will make a massive difference straight off the bat, but wont bring a Premiership. We will be competitive again, and as I said, the SHIT and there's a lot of over rated shit in the under 20s will be ****ed off and rightly so.

The interesting thing here is that we've already made a bunch of big signings!

                              - Todd Carney
                              - 2 blokes from RSA Union
                              - Jarred Waerea-Hargreaves (the "Sonny Bill of Union")
                              - Smith Samau
                              - Nick Kouparitis
                              - Daniel Conn

It would appear that a lot of the signings have been done before Smith even gets his say.

The future looks VERY hard for whoever takes over the Roosters! We're a broken team and don't seem to have a direct action plan with our signings, or to be honest many free options with our signings.

Smith isn't going to have the power to walk in and say "right boys HERE is how you make a winning team! Give me a telephone and I'll get in touch with all of the best players for your team... here's an envelope containing a list... make sure you dispose of these guys!"

I think the team's pretty well set in stone...
Karmichael Hunt is pretty well our only other option (bar out a few minor signings)... I think with the increasing value of the Dragons' team after this season (and a combination of both an exile away from the roosters and deflation in the value of our players) we will probably sign Hunt is he doesn't stay put. That... would be a HUGE signing, and would probably involve releasing The Count (unless he's pushed over to the wing... which I think would be silly because he's such a good fullback!)
*note: that's another ex-union player being signed... we seem to target them! An interesting project in my view...*

Meh... we'll have an okay team, but I think Smith's coaching in the off-season will be the most important factor. He needs to get the boys fit and motivated! No more Freddie saying "oh they're a fast team... so should be tough." Our boys should be as fit and fast as any other team in the comp...
