I always had reservations about signing Smith and this doesn’t make me feel any better about it. I wish we kept Verrills.

I remember when I was on here talking about Smith being a questionable signing and everyone roasted me.... lol.
I'm not one to say I told you so because I'm now more on board with the signing and think he has a role with us. It's just funny that the obvious issues he came with: not playing 80 mins, not having great service from dummy half... are happening and people are only just realising.

Try not to be too upset when Easts come good and Cheese finds some form (following two painful injuries this season that have limited high highlights reel).Last edited by ism22; 06-23-2023, 03:11 PM.

I'm not sure what Gordon Tallis has against Lodge- pointing to his signing as a type of person whom the Roosters would not recruit (he forgot we got Fergo out of the gutter) and lately saying he is too slow. Lodge isn't the reason for the Roosters poor form this year
Tallis obviously hasn’t forgotten… which is why he contradicts himself… one minute he’s complaining our recruitment is too good to be true… the next he’s saying we’re signing the wrong guys

I think ChookMaster was though.
I've actually grown fonder of Smith the more i've watched him and have actually enjoyed what he's done for us this season. Incredibly hard to judge a bloke who broke his ribs in what, the first 30mins of his career with us? Then he got the neck injury and then the thumb injury... I think he tries his guts out every time he enters the field and it hasn't changed this year.
What I was saying though, is that the people who are on his back were the same people that said I was wrong last year when I said that he wasn't an 80min hooker and that he wouldn't be the superstar a lot of people thought. I was getting stats about how he was the 2021 Hooker of the Year and that if Grant wasn't at Melbourne, he'd be on 1mil contract , etc. etc.
My argument has always been that Cheese is a tough bugger who is better off in your team than against it and gives you mongrel, max effort and running threat in the final third of the field. What he does lack though is crisp service and the ability to play 80mins at high intensity. So my point is, I'm not sure why people are now judging him and calling for his head over it, when he was never that kind of player in the first place.
Once he was unveiled a Chooks player, I was 100% behind and I still am. I think he adds a lot to the team. Dummy half service is not one of them. He has been far from the worst player this season and has shown patches of his natural game, which is promising for us going forward. Need him to string 10 games together and judge him from there. His attitude seems good.

Tbh I was sceptical about the cheese signing given how much I rated Verrills, how seamlessly he fell into our team dynamic and the fact that the cheese would cost twice as much.
Both are injury prone but I have faith that the Cheese can turn it around. He has had some really good patches and it was always going to take time. Against souths he turned the game (w JWH) and he set up a ripper try against Parra with Sammy & Kez. I just think he is a 40-50min hooker, not 60+. I’d like to see him and Turpin in tandem like Grant & Hunt for QLD. Cheese could also play some middle aswell.
