I decided to use Professor Google to do my own research.
Very cursory look.
I looked at some findings from Harvard, University of Pennsylvania and Australian Alzheimers association in relation to football concussions.
They were all around 2013 and 2014 but was the first few articles when I googled 'concussion effects on nfl dementia '.
Probably the most alarmist was the Aus one but even they had a quote from neurosurgeon Dr Andrew Gardner who said along the lines that while we need to ensure player safety, we need to be careful that we don't over react from the US findings until more research and data is available.
The uni of Pennsylvania took data from 45 retired NFL players(way too small sample size imo) and found their cognitive problems were not higher than average population. Ie. No different to general population.
Harvard paper just said usual 'we need to be careful' blah blah..
I am a middle aged man who played league and union as a kid and masters comp upto a few years ago and no where near NRL standard. But I forget words mid sentence, names, car keys etc. Its called aging. It's called mid life. And yes I get depressed in life as well.
Have sporting codes gone OTT with this issue?
The oft repeated quote is we would rather err on the side of caution, the players welfare. Hang on a sec, take Friend - he had a possible 2 to 3 years left to play. If he's on 500k, that's a potential 1.5m he has lost out on. Based on concussion research which isn't foolproof. Arent we actually potentially punishing him (income earning capacity)? Neuroscience would be one of the most nebulous of the medical specialties as well.
