Former Sydney Roosters player Lepuha Baba Paseka sent to jail for his part in series of armed robberies

    By Mark Oberhardt
    The Courier-Mail February 08, 2012 11:06PM

A former Sydney Roosters rugby league player who fell into depression when his football career ended due to injury, was on Wednesday one of four men jailed for a series of violent offences on Brisbane's southside.

    Jailed...former Rooster Lepuha Baba Paseka.

Instead playing before a packed football grandstand, Lepuha Baba Paseka was in a crammed District Court where he was jailed for 6 1/2 years.

Prosecutor Vicky Loury told the court, Paseka, 20, John Michael Daniels, 24, Salvador Enrique Diaz, 21, and Paul Sia, 22, were involved in various combinations together or with others, in violent robberies at southside hotels, a real estate agency and a home invasion.

Ms Loury said sawn off guns and gratuitous violence were used to frighten the victims in most of the offences.

She also detailed how Paseka, with other men not before the court, had been involved in a home invasion at Baronia Heights and had stolen guns from a safe

Paseka pleaded guilty to three robbery with violence counts, four of deprivation of liberty and one of burglary with violence.

Barrister Tony Entriken, for Paseka, said his client was signed by the Sydney Roosters for their Toyota Cup under 20 team after he finished Year 12 at Marsden High.

He said, however, Paseka suffered two serious ankle injures in 2009 and 2010 before being paid compensation and let go.

Mr Entriken said Paseka became depressed at the loss of his league career and fell in with the wrong crowd.

He said Paseka had strong family and Tongan community support and was doing courses in jail to rehabilitate.

I have never heard of him. They may as well have called him Neville Paseka. Next thing you will read could be my obituary stating my years of loyal service to the Roosters when at the peak of my powers I led the team to a Grand Final victory in my first year at the club. After this time I became a great of nrl, having played in a winning state of origin series and single handledley helping Australia win the tri nations.

Just another excuse to drag the Roosters name through the mud.

That's a shame. Messenger, Brown, Beetson, Fittler and Paseka - all immortal Roosters. It is a tragedy to see one end up like this. I am shattered.

Not once but 4 times including the headline.
Surely the Roosters could approach the Media. This is overkill and overly damaging to the brand. Next there will be a headline thta a former cleaner at The Roosters has been guilty of going home early.
Serious media campaign. State it once at a stretch, but not X4.

At a guess, I would say he may have used his downward-spiralling injury-plagued career at the Roosters as his defence for his actions, in court; hence the four mentions.

Atually this reminds me of the time good old Souffs boy Wes Patton was caught breaking and entering somewhere around the Alexandria Industrial area. The criminal mastermind was found trying to steal cigarettes from a vending machine if memory serves me correctly.

                        I can see it now

I pose to you your honour that it is the Sydney Roosters who should be on trial for ending this young promising player's career"

The arrest of ex-souffs player Craig Field for staging a robbery at the club he managed in Wagga was a classic.

I think he was acquitted though...

You are correct, at least according to Wikipedia.

After claiming to be the victim of an armed robbery at a hotel in Wagga Wagga on the night of 18 February 2007 of which he was manager at the time, it was alleged that the robbery had been staged and Field was subsequently charged with recruiting a child to participate in a criminal activity, making a false statement to police and three counts of stealing after a robbery.[8] On 11 August 2009, after a four day trial at Wagga Wagga Court House, Field was acquitted of all charges by a majority (11-1) jury verdict.
