What the hell was going on there?’: Flanagan slams Roosters for axing him ‘out of nowhere’

Bulldogs recruit Kyle Flanagan has blasted the Roosters’ decision to axe him after just one season at the Bondi club and questioned Trent Robinson in the process.

Flanagan was let go two years before his contract expired despite finishing third on the NRL point-scorer’s list in 2020 and the young half told The Sun Herald he was particularly frustrated with being dropped for Lachlan Lam mid-season at a time he believes he was playing well.

“It definitely [affected] my confidence during the year when I thought I was playing really well and I was the [competition’s] top points scorer, then I didn’t play two games out of nowhere,” Flanagan told The Sun-Herald.

“I look back now going, ‘What the hell was going on there?’

“I was pretty proud with how I responded to that and finished off the season.

“I remember [Robinson] saying to me, ‘You’re not playing poorly, we just want you to improve’.

“It was quite confusing. We were winning through that whole period there. I went back, trained hard, got back in the team and played well. I thought it was all part of the development.

“That was the most frustrating thing. I signed with the Roosters to grow and develop into the role over the next few years. Then to be told a year later that plan isn’t there any more, that was the hardest pill to swallow.”

The Roosters ultimately went out in straight sets in the finals due to a variety of factors, including a heavy injury toll that saw them fall short of their goal of a three-peat.

However Flanagan was made the scapegoat to some degree, despite the fact he was let go for a variety of reasons, including salary cap pressures and the need to sign a number of stars coming off contract, including James Tedesco, Luke Keary and the Morris brothers.

Good on him. Robertson isn't omnipotent, and he fukked up with Kyle, the kid never cost us a game, and we would have been better off keeping him.

go back and watch the game against Penrith in the semis. He should have got points for Penrith B&F
The fact he is still whinging and blaming the Roosters instead of taking some ownership shows why he would not succeed here and why he was not overly popular with the playing group

Time will tell if this was the right decision in punting Flanagan- Putting the eggs in one basket and hoping that either Lam/Walker/Keighran (if say Keary is half) Succeed is a risk one has to say due to their NRL inexperience - Notwithstanding that they lose a very competent goal kicker - Was it purely a cap issue?

With 2 top 30 spots left i have a feeling that Abbey will be signed for one year- a Reece Robinson move perhaps as 2 of the other train and trail are hookers (Beavan/Deakin) leaving Volkman((6/7) and Montgomery (Prop) the candidates since they have 3 hookers already. Not sure if they have some others in mind as the 29th player has to be named by Match 31 and the 30th by June 30.

From the list below Chooks have 4 goal kickers - Hutch/Lam/Tedesco and SST- Not seen Tedesco or Lam kick though- Volkman can kick- so it looks like SST will be first choice.

Who is this volkman? And why do I keep seeing around here that he may get picked in our top 30??

i think kyle was treated harshly by the chooks, he has a point there. but it was pretty evident kyle does not create much, more a catch pass, kixk goals type half. it pushed a lot of pressure onto keary especially without radley as a link. im sure we will miss his goal kicking , but we need a more creative half as well to truly give the comp a shake.

You need to watch it to see which players were missing tackles/errors/conceding 6 agains and penalties though when the riff scored 28 unanswered points -some of them SOO/Australian /NZ reps.

Cronk was backing Flanagan- trouble with the Chooks coaching set up is they are mostly defence orientated - Robbo/Fitzy/Cayless - King is the only former back amongst them and certainly not a halves coach.- I don't think Jason Taylor has any NRL role at the Chooks -coaching the Bears only i think?

Not sure if Cronk is still a halves consultant but he has his work cut out if he is - pity he couldn't have had a hands on role with Flanagan.

Be Interesting to see how Flanagan goes at the Dogs under Barrett - if he shines then questions need to be asked as they will be if Chooks are losing games by not having a goal kicker or a half if neither Lam/Walker/Keighran workout

Volkman is one of 5 train and trial possible candidates for the last 2 top 30 squad positions -may also be in contention for a development contract as there are 2 of these vacant

                        what a bunch of BS.
without doubt Flannagan cost us the Penrith game with appalling defensive reads. Its easy to call players missing tackles but many of those were due to Flannagan putting himself in poor position and leaving his work up to others.
But a poor defensive half is not really the issue, just pointing our he def did cost us games directly. Indirectly he cost us other games because he had an inability to develop an attacking game.
but I am sure when he does 2 or 3 good things at the Bulldogs people here will be calling out that we should not have let him go, while the rest will be laughing because the 2 or 3 will be partnered with the dozen or so poor things and the bucket loads of nothing

He was definitely treated harshly . 3 year contracted and punted after one . Of course he wasn't as good as Cronk but hes a kid . I never thought we should sign him in the first place but he was one of our better players most season because we had some very average ones at certain stages . Injuries cruel-ed us not Kyle

And that, ladies and gentlemen , is why we held the door open to farewell young Flanagan.

                            Wrong tude, wrong fit.

Chooks scored the most points during the regular season though -not bad one has to say in your opinion in not having an attacking half as he must have contributed and not just with his goal kicking.

As i said if he shines at the Dogs question will need to be asked about what development he received as the Chooks have a defence orientated coaching staff- Not sure what was expected of him being basically his first full year in the NRL though - to be Cronk/Langer/Johns/Thurston/Hastings all rolled into one.

Johns comments should be noted including not rushing Walker into the NRL when he is not ready - needs a year at least in the lower grades-so it will be Lam at seven and Keighran as a backup for Keary if he is forced to play 7 depending on how Lam goes.

Watching the match highlights below i can't see how Flanagan cost the Chooks the game vs the Riff -as Hanson often says "Please Explain"
