CALL it a surprise quinella - Kate Waterhouse is to marry her long-time love Luke Ricketson after the retired NRL pin-up popped the question on the eve of her brother Tom's lavish Italian wedding.
Romantic Ricketson proposed over dinner at a restaurant in Florence ahead of bookmaker Tom's nuptials with Hoda Vakili in the Sicilian town of Taormina next weekend.

Insiders said yesterday he spent weeks planning the proposal after calling his future father-in-law Robbie to ask for his only daughter's hand.

Once the request was granted Ricketson confessed his plans to Tom, with the source adding: "He didn't want to steal Tom's thunder."

Ricketson, 37, then presented Kate with what has been described as a "magnificent and impressive" engagement ring - designed in Sydney by jeweller and racing fan Ben Bunda - on Wednesday.

"I'm very, very excited. Both my children are going to marry loving partners. It's all a mother could hope for," beaming mum Gai said.


Robbie also tweeted: "Exciting news for Gai and me: Young Kate has accepted Luke's proposal of marriage. In romantic Florence. Such wonderful news!"

Ricketson's father Doug said he was very proud of his son and was sorry Luke's mother Edie, who died from cancer four years ago, wasn't alive to celebrate.

"They rang me to share the news ... and I spoke to Kate and she was very excited," he said. "(Kate) said they'd have a little turn-out when they got back from Europe in two weeks or so and they will then start planning their wedding."

The couple, who live together in Balmoral, are expected to marry in Sydney.

Tom Waterhouse tweeted: "Happiest news of the year. My sis is getting married. I'm so happy for you. Love you so much Katie and Luke."
