  • Nrl draft

    https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sp...e32266b792142e

An NRL player draft for rookies and the game’s biggest superstars has the backing of Peter V’landys as the current player movement system between clubs comes under review.

ARL Commission Chairman Peter V'landys has endorsed the introduction of a draft to replace the player movement market as a way to evenly distribute talent across the 16 NRL clubs.
Clubs have been making proposals to a working group convened by the NRL to look at how player movement can be improved to balance teams’ rosters and discourage bidding wars that inflate the value of contracts.
V’landys told The Saturday Telegraph the NRL was open to the current market system being replaced if it was no longer deemed as ‘best practice’.

Under the proposal off-contract players with two or more seasons of NRL experience would only be able to move clubs via a draft.
There would also be an opportunity for players in the Canterbury Cup and Intrust Super Cup to nominate for the draft.

Players with less than two seasons of NRL experience would only be able to enter the draft with their club’s permission.
Contracted players seeking a release would also go into the draft.

The draft order would be determined by where teams finished on the ladder the previous season. For instance, the last-placed team would get the first pick.

There would be a trade window before draft day to negotiate things like contract length and value.
In 1991, the NSWRL introduced a draft but it was quashed after the High Court ruled it was a restraint of trade. The class action against the NSWRL was sparked after former player Terry Hill was drafted to Eastern Suburbs instead of Western Sydney Magpies, where he wanted to play.

Any changes to the current system would have to wait until the collective bargaining agreement ends in 2022.

Rugby League Players Association CEO Clint Newton said any changes to how movement between clubs occurred would need to protect players from becoming commodities.
“We’re always open to discussions but the starting point is what we currently have in place under the collective bargaining agreement,” Newton said.

“Any changes to the current system would need to demonstrate significant positives for our members and their finite playing careers.”

    Well there you go.

So, Sam Walker we signed would have to go into a draft and be shipped off to NZ/FNQ/Titans?
Jake Friend would have to move to NZ/Melb once his contract with the Roosters finishes?
Our players would be drafted to the Titans?
What if the wife and kids don't want to uproot and move to NZ/FNQ away from the support of family?

"No! I don't want to go to the Titans. I want to go to the Roosters and be coached by Trent Robinson, even for less money"!

    All roads lead to lawyers.

I understand it being off contract players going into the draft if not resigned by the current club or want to test their value on the open market.
If Teddy for example contract is up and he is happy to sign with the deal offered by the Roosters then he signs. If he or the club decide otherwise then he goes into a draft.

What if the said club were to offer a low amount?

So I'm guessing like they do now, the player and club would offer and negotiate a deal before. If a contract wasn't signed by the day of the draft then the said player goes into the pool

Start paying real market rates first. This means salary cuts of around 40-70% at least.
I am not a supporter of a draft, but I could not care if we had one.

The players have to suck it up and stop being sooks

Remember our team is not a team of super stars its a team mostly made up of good players that our coaching staff have developed. On that it would not make much difference to the Roosters

Difference is a lot of players will play for clubs like us and storm for less . Success means more to some as long as they are earning good dollars they are happy to stay for less. Not Latrine but

I am not in favour of any form of draft.

Clubs like ours should never be disadvantaged.

Some people believe supporting the Roosters
is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed
with that attitude. I can assure you it is
much, much more important than that.

Do they intend to have transfer fees as well ??? - will have to be agreed to by the players as otherwise it's doomed. AFL have this but all it would take is one player to challenge it in court and it's no more draft- US Sports have drafts plus free agency

You can’t force someone to play for a club they don’t want to be at. I like the idea in theory because it’s boring watching so many shit teams in the current competition and a draft would even it up. But it just wouldn’t be fair on the players. Can’t see it working.

                      Terry Hill.

So when we were a struggling club and picked up Terry Hill in the draft, he challenged it to go to the then cashed up Magpies to play under the Wok I recall??
Now the tables have turned and the roosters turned their club around, everyone wants the draft back... They can go and f$ck themselves I say!!

It seems to get alot of attention in other sports. People sit there up to 3 days watching the AFL, NBA & NFL drafts.

sounds very socialist/communist to me to have everyone/thing equal and in this case teams- next thing will be ranking players in positions and allocating them to teams that way.

Why would the players agree to a system that reduces salaries and forces their families to move?

We don't need a system to even up the comp - that's what referees are for.
