Roosters move to extend Manu as family already plot GF invasion

    Dan Walsh NRL.com Reporter
Rising Roosters star Joey Manu has begun extension talks with the premiers around a long-term deal to ensure he does not go to market on November 1.

Manu and fellow strike centre Latrell Mitchell headline an all-star troupe of Tricolours able to officially field rival offers at the end of rugby league's calendar year.

The international pair, captain Jake Friend and props Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Siosiua Taukeiaho are all off contract in 2020, while negotiations around new deals for Zane Tetevano (two to three years) and veteran Mitch Aubusson (one-year) continue.

NRL.com understands the Roosters and Mitchell's management will revisit extension talks before the end of the regular season, having put discussions on hold amid a drama-filled Origin period for the 22-year-old.

Manu meanwhile has done the same to focus on the final two months of the season, but plans to ink a new, upgraded Roosters deal once his 2019 campaign is wrapped up.

"We've started up those talks with the club," Manu told NRL.com.

"I want to be here, we started it up a while ago but I've since said I'm focusing on my footy and the end of the season which I think is best for everyone.

"I've given it a little bit of thought and have had a few chats with my manager, it is your future after all.

"I said I want to focus on this season and where we're heading.

"I'm happy here at the moment, it's a good crew, a good team and everyone wants to win. I love being in a winning team so we'll look after that stuff in the off-season and see what we can do there."

Having come through the Roosters' system alongside Mitchell, Manu has developed into one of the game's elite centres with his New Zealand Test debut following last year's premiership win.

Mitchell even declared Manu could be the best centre in the game after the pair squared off at international level last year.

The 23-year-old Kiwi's prowess was again on show in Sunday's 20-12 win over Canterbury, with Manu scoring a try and terrorising opposite number Kerrod Holland all afternoon.

Manu had around 40 family members flying in from the tiny town of Tokoroa and crashing at his Botany apartment in the lead-up to last year's grand final, a show of support the extended Manu clan are already preparing to repeat.

Manu expects even more family to invade his place should the Roosters go all the way again as plane tickets and floor space are already being booked up.

"Everyone came over and pushed me out of my own two-bedroom apartment," Manu grinned.

"I had to go stay at a hotel. It was crazy but it was fun and they've already booked their tickets to come over for the GF again.

"They're already talking it up, they're all trying to book rooms and floor space at my place again.

"I think there's going to be more [than last year]. Some of the family that didn't come they were a bit gutted when they saw all the videos and photos.

"So heaps of family missed out and now they're all getting in early in case we go that far this year."

Clubs looks to want to re-sign both Latrell and Manu - would think its hard to keep both (especially if they both go on the open market). Hopefully we organise extensions before that or else they'll see $$$

Aubbo I think they re-sign for a year, think he sounds like he wants to keep going if there is an offer and I imagine the roosters will offer him one more at least

Tets I think they will re-sign if they have the cap space, however he may be getting some better offers I'd imagine from other clubs. Often happens with our upcoming bench players who are good but can't crack the starting team - we make them in to really consistent, flexible players which other clubs are desperate for, offering a starting gig and more $ (e.g. Matterson)

Next year will be tough but we do have coopers $1m to help

Surely have to do everything to re-sign SST - another you don't want to go to open market (I'm sure the warriors would love him back now - always tempting when family is there)

Jake Friend will be offered a new contract you'd imagine because of his role in the team unless he's body is no good - however I think he still has a lot of determination and will play on

JWH is another tough one. Well liked by the club, loyal and experienced forward who has been here a long time. Deserves a new contract for what he has done for the club but could also see him going overseas to finish his career although other nrl teams who are desperate may throw big money at him to get his experience (Titans, Warriors etc). Will be 31 next year

Yeah didn't like that part, talking about his family book flights and everything already... all for the confidence but not a fan of speaking too early. Just brings arrogance and complacency - probably an experience thing but as fans have witnessed just because things were great one year doesn't mean it will be automatic the next year, even with most of the same team. If anything it will be much harder with a target on their backs.

Every team that plays the Roosters see's it as a huge opportunity to make a statement. I think Robbo has put a lot of effort into keeping the team still motivated for back to back, but that's easier said than done. It's almost impossible to have the same hunger (although the opportunity to go back to back is such a rare feat it should be wanted more) and I think recent performances have shown us being pretty laid back, expecting to win

Hopefully this changes. I think robbo knows that the only way to achieve back to back is not through getting back the same hunger because you can't, but its about playing smarter

            Love Joey Manu.

Would hurt to see him in another jersey like it does RTS.

I think he will stay at the Chooks but if he doesnt I think they have another gun who could take his place.

Wouldnt surprise me if Billy gets picked up by another club over the off season. You cant blame him.

Looks like one of our wing spots seems to always be in doubt with old men Morris and hall battling injuries.

I feel Billy will end up on the right wing if we keep both Joey and Latrell.

Great to see the confidence with the family getting ready for B2B. I think they will be pleased, certainly to be at least part of the big day again.
