What I have seen done though, is a player pointing to the posts and telling the ref he is going to tap it.

I could be wrong but didn't Marty Bella always stand near the goal posts during origin in case a penalty goal was missed? I have vague memories of him doing it in the pouring rain when Mick O'Connor was taking a shot.

Kevin Hastings hit the up right up with a penalty kick at goal at Penrith Park in 1980 and the ball was regathered and was passed out to Ian Schubert who scored.
Are you related to David Middleton?

            Makes sense.

If they do a legitimate attempt and it hits the cross-bar or gets shanked, it is play-on. Seems pretty stupid to get into a huddle TBH.

he can take the shot and miss , if he covers it well enough. if from the side line and blows it out to the far side of the field, and we may have a chaser or two then score.
or plan B is to hit the post and rebound.
or c, the opposition are with in the 10 (deemed off side and miss then score. 8 point try

Teams only seem to not worry about lining up for a miss when it's in front.

Perfectly legal. The reverse is however, illegal.

I think Parra used to do a version of this with Mick Cronin kicking the ball across the field and the chasers running through to catch it
