seeing as mini is here for 1 more year its likely the position is his for 2012.... and i know many people here are already making their dugan signs for 2013... but I think we could be a lot smarter about our recruitment... I would love if the club attempted to sign a josh hoffman, gerard beale, wil zillman or glen fisiahi (sorry about spelling)... all are of contract at the end of 2012 and all bring in a large amount of potential, they all play there best footy at fullback and bar hoffman none of them are their current teams 1st choice fullbacks...

I think their style of play could suit our team and none of them would bring in the attitude and rather large asking price of dugan... this would leave us more money to invest in positions we are lacking or to re-sign the youngsters we have coming through

Well fuuck me sideways, someone record this talk and put in on repeat until it becomes fact.

It breaks my heart that I have to say that.

I really wish the poor guy had retired on a relative high last year, or even after his Origin 2 performance this year.

He deserves so much more out of this game than what he's ended up with. Robbed of the best years of his career, and now battling hard (and failing) to stave off old age and ineptitude.

In my eyes, he was an Easts great. Emphasis on the 'was.'

Fullback is arguably the easiest position to play, why not just develop our own. It's a shame Wells is leaving but I reckon we need to get them before they've even played first grade. Regardless though the end result is that we shouldn't settle for Mini, he's one of the worst fullbacks going round.

Great bloke, great servant, admire his loyalty and feel for him but it's just the way this business is. He can't be our fullback in 2012, it's that simple.

If it was 1961, Keith Barnes was the fullback you're talking about and all he had to do is Goalkick then you'd be right.

The fullback these days has to be part 5/8th, part winger, part forward and part coach.

Watching players like Slater, McKinnon and Dugan organize players around them proves that the role of Fullback has changed markedly.

You're given all the room in the world to attack and you have next to no defensive responsibilities.

I'm not for a second arguing or questioning the talent that play in that position just their role.

Yep, catching those bombs with 13 guys from the opposition bearing down on you, ready to knock you into next week is a real piece of cake! And what about those line breaks.....you know when there's 2 or 3 guys bearing down at you after busting the frontline, its pretty easy to stop those too. But my favourite is those grubbers that bounce at right angles, left angles, every which way angles..... You're right, there's really no challenge in playing fullback.

All you've done is state the hard bits about being a fullback, you could do the same with any position. Make a point and I'll happily explain myself. Don't be such a bigot.

err I think he did make a point......that your comment was incorrect.

Fullback is probably one of the harder positions to play purely because of the amount of ground they are required to cover during a game as well as the multiple skills they require and situations they face.

Sorry mate, but that's a massive call.

Fullback is not an easy position to excel in. You have to cover a lot of ground, constantly be in support, position yourself for an opponents kicking game, and run in back into a wave of a defence time and time again. Next to no defensive responsibilities? From that comment, I'd question whether you've ever played the game... a fullback's positional play in defence is a massive part of a team's go forward, and when the opposition are in your red zone, a fullback has all the responsibility of cleaning up kicks into the in goal.

It is not an easy position. And that is why it is so important to have a good one - it's part of the spine of a rugby league team, and we are weak there.

Watching the Broncos v Warriors match last night really did highlight how awful our back 3 are compared to the better teams, some of the footwork and acceleration from the likes of Locke, Hoffman, Yow Yeh, Beale and Tupou last night was mighty impressive.

Sorry but that is such a massively incorrect comment. Fullback is one of the most important defensive postions on the field. Because of the view of the game a good fullback will be the director of the defense. A good fullback's positional play is crucial to defense.

They may not do as many tackles in the line, but their defensive responsibilities are up there with any other players on the field.
Not only that the tackles they make are often harder as they are one on one and at pace.

as many have said before FB is not the easiest....at all (i've never played at FB but just from being a spectator i can tell it takes constant thinking, moving and talking), no position is really 'easy' to play but if i had to pick i'd say it'd be somewhere up front or on the wings. The job of a prop is relatively simple- make a heap of tackles, catch the ball, run it up hard and play the ball quickly (occasionally looking for an offload if possible)...that's really it.

Backrowers have slightly more to do in attack, but have a similar defensive role. Hookers, like fullbacks are extremely busy and need to be on their feet and thinking all the time (along with the halves, the hooker shares the playmaking role for the whole team and is also responsible for getting the team across the advantage line on every play). The centres and wingers have a relatively light workload in defence, but are obviously highly involved in attack (especially nowadays that they are the ones often taking the first 2 hit ups if the team is in their own end) but when without the ball, the job of a winger in particular is quite simple (this coming from a former winger :P)

It's a good thing you said arguably R6. If you had have left that out you would have been torn to shreds.
