  • We all need some perspective

We're all obviously bitterly disappointed by the start to this season, even though the truth is we could easily be 2 or 3 from 5.

I think we all need some perspective, we've had 3 brilliant seasons at the top and the way the NRL is run makes it near impossible to spend much longer there. The only exception is Melbourne, who have had some once in a generation spine players together for a decade.

It took us a long time to recover post Freddy from 2005 until 2012 we had two finals campaigns to show for our efforts. We went for the quick rebuild in 2008 and that resulted in the 2009 wooden spoon. In 2010 we made the big dance on the back of a freak Todd Carney. Our 2013 premiership didn't happen by chance, as Carney went off the rails in 2011, they re-build had started. Young players like JWH, Guerra, Pearce, SKD and Friend become seasoned. A couple of other youngsters were blooded in 2012/13 and enough room was left for 3 superstars. It was perfection.

But the way the NRL works is you're punished for success. A number of players have been upgraded (including Guerra, who most of us were happy with at the time). We were blindsided with RTS and the great leveller (aka salary cap) meant we couldn't match the Warriors offer. The Sharks offered Maloney longer terms than we would and the club rightly or wrongly chose to back Hastings. The clearest indication that a re-build was happening was the punting of Jennings.

I don't recall a time when a club has lost half it's spine due to the salary cap. Add to that our 3 most experienced/influential players are missing.

I'm not happy that we're 0/5 and I expect more from our team. But some perspective is needed... 05, 06, 07, 09, 11 & 12 were all pretty painful years, but under POS the club really got it's foundations back in order. This year might be bad, next year could also be bad, but we're going to have one hell of a footy team in a few years time.

Here is some perspective. With the exception of RTS, it was our decision to abandon a minor premiership winning roster. Stop making it sound like we had a gun put to our head.

Thanks for the chuckles dice. I imagine that's a lot more 'perspective' than the OP was counting on.

You are right. The club has obviously taken a long term view into the future with its recruitment for this season and beyond. Which is not the usual Roosters recruitment strategy, which is why some find it so hard to fathom.

Short term pain for long term gain (we hope).

That is true, apart from the $600K left unspent in the hope Hayne is coming. I do though think that the club underestimated the impact of letting those players go and thought we would still be competing for the top 8 rather than running bottom of the table. However people calling for Robbo's or POS sackings are so far wide of the mark it is not funny.

About time we humor them by asking for their better alternatives, however seriously what we know is that these guys are good enough to get the club back on track, it might be next year or more likely 2018, however the path to success is not chopping and changing coaches, especially good ones. If you were to sack coaches after every losing streak, who would want to take the job in future? They would rather sign for a club prepared to build for success.

There is little point in bringing perspective to this website.

ive lived through the pain of 66 not winning a game, but in 67 we made the semis, weve been riding pretty high the last few years so it really is time to bring along generation next? of course it wont happen overnight but it will happen and we all know what to look forward too unlike the fans at cronulla!

We will make the 8. I can feel it in my waters.

We are all used to that saying about making hay whilst the sun shines.

I give Robbo some credit for having the courage to "rebuild" a minor premiership team which were also short-priced favourites before JWH and Pearce injuries.

I think the salary cap had something to do with it as well.

I love your optimism postcode. Sure beats the negative whingers on here.

Whose to say we wouldn't be in the top 4 with jwh Pearce and cordner in the team? Hard to say management got it wrong until we have the team they intended on the Park. We've lost a game by a point, one by two points and one in Golden point. I think our full strength team would have won all three.

If just Pearce plays we win all 3.

Don't put words in my mouth. I was correcting OPs assumption that the personnel decisions were forced upon us. We could have retained Maloney and Jennings if we really wanted to. The decision was ours.

I also understand that we have had some rotten luck with Cordner and Pearce.
