  • Mini on Omar

Omar Slaimankhel has emerged as a surprise contender to fill Roger Tuivasa-Sheck's vacated Sydney Roosters fullback spot, according to NRL club great Anthony Minichiello.

The son of Afghan refugees, Slaimankhel, 23, was rated as one of the game's greatest young talents several seasons ago after scoring 47 tries in 51 National Youth Competition games for the Warriors.

However after just five NRL games for the New Zealand-based franchise in 2012, he signed a lucrative deal with Japanese rugby club Canon Eagles.

He returned to rugby league midway through this year with Roosters feeder side Wyong Roos and was named in the NSW Cup team of the season.

Centre Blake Ferguson has been viewed as the most probable successor to Tuivasa-Sheck in the Roosters' custodian role for next season after the Kiwi international's move to the Warriors.

However long-time Tricolours fullback Minichiello, who vacated the post at the end of 2014, said Slaimankhel was also a contender.

Minichiello, who is part of the Roosters' coaching staff, helped mentor Tuivasa-Sheck in his successful move this year from wing to fullback.

"Blake Ferguson could really transition well into the position and there's Omar Slaimankhel who played reserve grade for us really well this year," Minichiello said.

"It all depends on who develops in the pre-season and shows the fitness and capability to do it."

Slaimankhel was born in Pakistan and moved to New Zealand when he was two.

Despite winning three successive minor premierships, the Roosters failed to qualify for the grand final for the second year in a row.

Minichiello denied the Roosters had become NRL chokers.

"I think this year that first final (loss to Melbourne) hurt the boys a bit. We had a 12-game winning streak up until then and, as soon as you lose that first final, it makes things harder," he said.

"We were a bit off that night and the boys are still disappointed in their performance; they knew that but there's always another year."

with Mini looking after them, oneof them will develop into a suitable FB and give time for Mitchell to grow into the position

      Well, there we have it.

Unless he makes a meal of it in the trials or injures himself, Fergo will be our man at fullback to start 2016.

          Fergo
          Toops
          Jenko
          SKD
          Burgess

          Fergo
          Toops
          Jenko
          SKD
          Elliot

          Jenko
          Elliot
          SKD

It'll be interesting to see if Fergo has the motor. His decision making will also be tested.Huge challenge ahead for Blake imo.

I reckon option 2 with Burgess playing up at the central coast and waiting for an opportunity.

Pearcey's long kicking game will be handy.

And Fittler thought Firman and Aubusson were the answer to our halves...

Yep, agreed. I also think number 2 is most likely. Elliot has the runs on the board in first grade. I'm sure Burgess will get his chance as first drop before long.

LOL whooooo England's best winger came all the way over her to play for Wyong. Reminds me of Casty. Seriously, why would the bother? Burgess could probably get some big bucks in England or France...

Where would you rather live? England or Bondi?

Imagine being a single, 20 yr old professional athlete living in Bondi. That's the dream right there and that's why they'll come.

Then they look at a map and see where Wyong is.

Point taken though - $250k+ to live in a warm climate, train 3 or 4 days a week and get pissed with the boys (most of whom work as tradies on the side) a few nights a week would be a pretty sweet gig. You can then go back on higher pay saying 'oh I was signed with an NRL club' and rely on the security that they won't be able to find footage of any Wyong roos games online (i.e. 'it was in Australia' will look sweet, seeing how shyte NSW cup is compared with the NRL won't).

Man I want that gig!!! Gym in the morning every day (as usual), training with Rip Taylor a few days a week (damn not anymore but somebody similar - no offence, but a big step down from pro training), physio + ink appointments during the day (although I'd personally stay tat free), no interstate travel on weekends (while getting an NRL salary) and Wyong rent (get a nice waterfront apartment within that salary easily) would be sweeeet!!

It won't take long for him to cement a spot IF he's good enough. The season is long and he'll get an opportunity.Different story if we sign Hayne or another established FB. Fergo will stay at right centre with SKD on the wing.

The Hipster did nothing wrong and will get 1st crack imo.

It was chris anderson and It was actually Josh Lewis and Mitch Aubo. He also though that Shaun Foley was heir apparent to mini.....
