NRL MOVES to include Polynesian players in the State of Origin series would open the door for superstar Sonny Bill Williams to make a comeback at the Sydney Roosters.
Moves to change the Origin selection criteria to include Kiwis and Pacific Islanders have been under discussion for several months.
Origin is no longer a contest between the best 34 players in the competition as it used to be because so many Kiwis are now ranked higher than Origin players.
And that has been reflected in the poor standard of games in recent years.
Sonny Bill wants to play for the All Blacks in this year’s World Cup and then represent New Zealand at the Rio Olympics in 2016
He would then return to the Roosters in 2017 as a 31-year-old for the final few years of his career.
Origin is the one event Sonny Bill has always wanted to be part of. He stays in regular contact with Roosters supremo Nick Politis, who says he will always keep the door open for the champion backrower.
The Origin selection criteria will be discussed by the commission before next year’s series. Kiwis and Pacific Islanders have played Origin in the past through loopholes in the selection process.
I would find it very surprising if Kiwis were to be included in Origin, but if so I wouldn't be surprised if SBW would want a crack at it.
Even if this isn't true in regards to the Origin part, has anyone in the know on here had any indication that Sonny could return one day? I feel he would be great coming off the bench at around the 20min mark and playing a roaming role around the field for the rest of the match. This could make him lethal in attack as he could play a reaction role of what was in front of him, making us almost unstoppable. Even at 31, in his condition, he would still be easily one of the fittest forwards in the game.
