LADIES and gentlemen, in the Roosters’ corner, tipping the scales at 120kg and a towering 195cm . . . hailing from Auckland . . . Willis ‘The Hitman’ Meehan!
Son of veteran Kiwi fighter Kali ‘Mean Hands’ Meehan, Willis’ pre-season has been disrupted by three pro boxing bouts – all victories.
But according to Tricolours recruitment chief Peter O’Sullivan, the heavyweight southpaw has trained the house down and is primed to add plenty of punch to the Chooks’ NRL pack in 2015.

“Boxing hasn’t hampered him in any way. It’s kept him fresh and he looks in the best shape we’ve ever seen him in,” O’Sullivan raves.
“He’s had a much better off-season than last year, obviously a bit interrupted with some boxing commitments, but that’s behind him now. It’s not like he loses any fitness while he’s not here. He looks as good as I’ve ever seen him. He’s fresh and ready to go. He’s been on our elite list for a couple of years and we have high expectations of him, so we’re looking forward to seeing if he can cement his spot in the 17.”
An Auckland-born boxer in the Roosters’ back row is bound to draw comparisons with Sonny Bill Williams, but O’Sullivan insists the explosive Meehan is a different beast.
“Obviously they’re big, athletic people – they’re the similarities they have – but the styles are nothing like each other,” he explains.
“Willis is a power player. He can certainly play on the edge, he can certainly play in the middle. He’s not a passer, he’s a running player with devastating power.
“He’ll run through you, he’ll run over you, and he’s got some nice footwork to do some good things close to the edge.”
Meehan earned his only NRL start in round 14 last year before returning to the Under-20s, where he sewed up the NYC lock-of-the-year gong.
With Williams returning to rugby to chase a second World Cup and experienced Kiwi rep Frank-Paul Nu’uausala joining Canberra, O’Sullivan expects to see the boxing back-rower lodge a serious claim for one of those first-grade vacancies.
“Whoever does the business out on the field is going to get the spot,” he says.
