This is where the club needs to step in though. I think society will have failed if we sack someone who clearly has a problem, who has done nothing wrong in this case as far as we know, just because of money and public image. He has a problem and we need to support him. Because that's the right thing to do.

We'll have no choice but to sack him mate.Originally posted by Spanner in the works View PostThis is where the club needs to step in though. He doesn't want to be helped and we can't force him.Loved by few, hated by many, respected by all.

I understand he did not commit assault. Watts is the villain here. But Carney recently escaped jail, by a thread. He is attending AA. Any time his name comes up, it gets put in the papers. It brings our club into disrepute, whether it's true or not, because like it or not, people will believe anything.Originally posted by Spanner in the works View PostIt's not that easy, and he has done nothing wrong. Don't punish him by association.
He should not be drinking, at all. He should have been in Gosford, watching the game from the sidelines.

We have a winner.Originally posted by Johnny Tobin View PostWhat if he assured his team, coach and the NRL that he would stop drinking - and he goes out late drinking when he is not playing because of injury?
We have no choice. As unpalatable as it is, he must & will be sacked.Loved by few, hated by many, respected by all.

If he is in the wrong I dont want to see him wearing our colors ever again...however I think we should stick with him and se him through rehab. Surely we have a duty of care to do so.Originally posted by Big Poppa Pump View PostWe'll have no choice but to sack him mate.

And you're assuming it's that easy to give up the grog? Innocent until proven guilty. I don't know whether this was planned or not, but Rothfield mentioning Carney has worked a charm for his agenda. You've been Rothfielded.Originally posted by Big Poppa Pump View PostWe'll have no choice but to sack him mate.

I agree mate but how can we force him to do it?Originally posted by Assyrian_Pimp View PostIf he is in the wrong I dont want to see him wearing our colors ever again...however I think we should stick with him and se him through rehab. Surely we have a duty of care to do so.
He promised the club, his team-mates, the coach, the NRL, his mother & every single fan of the game that he would give up the drink & attend AA. That was just over a week ago. Now we read that he's been out at a pub whilst injured in the company of another injured player & known grub.
Personally I think he just doesn't care anymore.Loved by few, hated by many, respected by all.

Do you honestly think he was just drinking lemonade? Even if the club came out and said that's all he was drinking I would not believe them. Spin doctors and cover-ups.Originally posted by Spanner in the works View PostBut you're assuming he has done something wrong? And you're assuming it's that easy to give up the grog? There is no suggestion that Carney was drinking inappropriately or that he was involved in assaulting anybody. Lets make that clear...
It could be the case that Watts and Carney had 1 beer together while they chatted about how it sux being out. Afterwards (and unrelated) Watts assaulted his wife. Just having a beer with somebody doesn't connect you with a serious crime!

It comes back to the fact alcohol is addictive, and the club should have had better minders for him. The club should never have let him get in that position, and if he did drink, then we all know why he did. We can't enable him by not punishing him if he was drinking, but sacking him is far too harsh, given that he has only just come to the realisation he has a drinking problem, and he has only just sought help for it. Sit him on the sidelines (no football - not even Atherton) for two months. Take away his pay for three months. But don't sack him.Originally posted by Big Poppa Pump View PostDo you honestly think he was just drinking lemonade? Having said that, if he is ever the offender in a serious incident then we have no other option.Last edited by Spanner in the works; 04-17-2011, 06:00 PM.
