  • LARS for Cherro?

Considering the circumstances, I wonder if the medical staff will consider putting Cherro through the radical LARS surgery that saw Nick Malceski back in 12 weeks?

If he has snapped it through the middle of the ligament, like they think he has. It's a big possibility!!!

Both Doctor and head physio, Dr. John Orchard and Travis Tooma are not fans of this surgery. It will not happen. He's only 22, still has some time in the game yet.

HEARTBROKEN Roosters back-rower Anthony Cherrington will this week decide if he has the same radical knee surgery that allowed Sharks winger Luke Covell and Sydney Swans player Nick Malceski to make miracle returns.

Cherrington was an emotional wreck on Saturday at Leichhardt Oval after he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

The popular youngster was making his long-awaited return after he missed all of 2010 because of major surgery on his right knee.

Cherrington met respected club doctor John Orchard yesterday and together with Roosters coach Brian Smith will decide in the next 48 hours if they should opt for an artificial ligament - or what is commonly known as ligament augmentation and reconstructive system operation (LARS) - to give him a chance of a speedy return.

Orchard said 22-year-old Cherrington would have a huge say on what surgery he underwent, and Malceski and Covell could be contacted to help decide the final outcome.

Cherrington has age on his side, and a recent extension to his contract means there is no need to rush his return for the sake of securing a new deal. But a second straight season on the sidelines could be too tough to bare.

"He came in this morning and his knee is very sore and swollen and, although he is yet to have scans, I'm almost certain it's going to be a torn anterior cruciate," Orchard said.

While there is no certainty it won't happen again, he should get it fixed properly and go through the rehab and take that time to rebuild not only his knee but his confidence to retake the field.

          Chook.

I heard about it while watching the All Stars game. Man, you have to feel sorry for the kid. Maybe he should buy a lottery, surely he is due for a bit of good luck.

I really hope Cherro doesn't go for the LARS surgery. He needs to get it right. He is only young and still has plenty of years ahead to make a decent FG career.

Look at Ryan Cross - he had a bucket load of injuries, but still played plenty of first grade and will be remember as one of our centres in our Golden Era!

Am I wrong in assuming that if he does have this LARS surgery Then if he does that knee again he is history as far as a RL player or possibly any fast moving sport is concerned I thought I read this somewhere. Could somebody please enlighten me as to whethr this is the case

I agree, it is an option of last resort and at 22 years of age it is far too early for that.

I read something similar but i thought it just meant you were unable to have the LARS procedure twice on the same knee, don't think it means you can't have a normal reconstruction after the LARS one.
