Phil Graham is not a player who grabs headlines or causes much of a stir and when he returns to national capital this weekend with Todd Carney by his side that won’t change.
The former Canberra Raiders flyer said he “had not thought too far ahead to this match” and admitted that it playing against the Radiers was something he never imagined would happen until he signed with the Bondi club late last year.
See the team for Sunday's match here at Roosters TV.
Making his debut for the Green Machine in 2002 Graham quickly won the hearts of the locals picking up the club’s Rookie of the Year award and racing to 68 tries in 111 matches before he left.
His return will be overshadowed by former Raiders teammate and now fellow Tricolour Carney, and when they run out Graham said that will become pretty obvious.
“I dare say the crowd will be into him a bit,” Graham quips.
“Todd will deal with it. He did last time and he played awesome against Canberra up here in round 6.
“You’d have to ask Todd what he’s feeling but we know he is a class act and he can step up and be great for us on the weekend. We need everyone to be, we need a win,” he said.
Maybe he could have grabbed the headline last weekend when the Roosters lost in the final seconds to some Kevin Locke heroics.
Graham blames himself for that defensive lapse and making amends this weekend is atop the priority list for the 29-year-old.
“I was pretty disappointed after last weekend’s loss,” a glum Graham admits.
“It was concentration on my behalf that cost us and that’s the disappointing thing. The boys put in so much effort and to lose in the final seconds was pretty disheartening.
“We have to keep that effort up and concentrate for the entire 80 minutes this week and I think we can win in Canberra, which is a difficult thing to do,” he stated.
Graham will come up against several impressive youngsters in the Raiders backline, none more imposing than hulking 20-year-old Queenslander Daniel Vidot.
He will be counting on all of his 100 plus first grade games of experience to get the better of his man as he is all to weary of his quality.
“Vidot is a great talent and is a great player,” he said.
“I saw him coming through the ranks down there and you could always see these blokes like Dugan, Crocker, Thompson and Vidot were going to make a name for themselves.
“They are young at the moment but their future looks bright. I owe one to our boys so I’ll be using all my experience in that battle to help the side get a win down there.”
