FORMER Test star Craig Wing is hoping for an audacious return for a final season with the Roosters in 2015.
Wing, who turns 35 in a couple of weeks, ends his contract with his Japanese rugby union club Kobelco Steelers early in the new year.
With Roosters hooker Jake Friend to miss the early rounds of 2015 after surgery, Wing is hopeful of a call-up to the club he represented from 2000 to 2007.
The former golden boy has told mates he would love one last stint in the NRL and is believed to have held informal talks with Roosters officials.
His chances were looking good – but the Roosters’ decision to sign promising Canberra rake Matt McIlwrick last week may put a dent in his plans.
Wing hasn’t played in the NRL since quitting Souths at the end of the 2009 season but reports from Japan suggest he has retained his zip and speed.
A couple of clubs short of experience in the hooker/halfback areas may also take a look at the veteran utility if he can’t come to terms with the Roosters.
