  • Robbo on Penalties

Mercifully, it looks like Robbo is going to go to the NRL on our penalty situation.

Definitely this issue is in the spotlight now.

The way he's played the issue - subtly, never doing his lolly, always laying the blame at the club and not the refs - has been pretty masterful.

    Smartest coach in the NRL.

Robbo is a genius, the old adage that you catch more flies with honey than vinegar has never been more apt.

My favourite part was when asked if they expected RTS to score tries like he did last night, and straight away Mini say "Yep!!" Then both start laughing. In all seriousness though RTS is one of the most special players to come along in a very long time and I hope we can keep him a one club player who goes on to play over 300 games for the chooks.

Robbo still didn't really address the core issue, though, in my opinion, ie. not only are we the most penalised team, but we also receive the fewest penalties. That, to me, is the more damning statistic ... and the one that reeks the most of foul play, and of something not being quite right.

It has gone on for years. It ends now.

Buderus said that RTS has the best footwork of any player that he's played against in 14-odd seasons!

And at the same time pointing out the fact that its been going on for the last 10 years & that we're working hard on the issue. Clearly trying to put the pressure back on to the refs.

Agree with all of your post except for the very last short sentence and for that I hold slim hope.

When I saw that article I was amazed that the very shrewd TR had finally taken up the challenge. Good luck Trent, not even some of the Roosters' own supporters think there's a problem here so I hope you get a better reception when you visit with the refs.

What Robbo is saying hey Manl and Melbourne do it all the time .How come we cant get away from it.
Let it be know most GF winning teams were not just good at playing they were also the best cheats -you need that to have an edge ..for us unfortunately ..where Easts its double the penalties

He's been able to articulate it better because we are winning IMO (so he can be less emotional and doesn't sound like a sore loser because he's just won 42-6, is #1 on the ladder and has shut out multiple teams this season despite hideous penalty balances.) Winners write the history so it's a good chance to set things straight.

                  I liked 2 points:
                  1) When we are penalised it's our fault and they're not reaching back 10 years + being biased the whole time. Saying our team has probably lacked discipline over that time and needs to address it is fair.

                  2) Refs go in with an attitude about teams and that will blur their vision. We know they have cheat sheets... I'd personally love to see one on us (why can't they be public so that coaches can address the penalties and move on?) I wouldn't be surprised of they are along the lines of:

"Roosters traditionally play like ______, make sure you watch out for _______."

As a result they'll have a big focus on for example tactics we use to speed up the play and won't allow them. Because they are focussing on their crib notes, they miss the bigger picture and keep focussing on less important areas.

                  ---

FWIW I'm surprised these cheat sheets haven't adapted over time (given they insist on handing then out) so that refs are told:

                  1) The storm use dodgy tactics to slow the ball down, penalise them out of the game until they learn. I don't care if Cameron Smith and Billy Slater complain... send them off for whinging if you have to, they're not above the game. We'll back you if you put stars on report by suspending them using the same rules dished out to other players during the season...

                  2) Same with QLD Origin and it's the same blokes. Don't listen to the crowd or Smith, Slater, Inglis... whoever. If you see ______ blow your whistle until they learn.

                  ---

As an amateur ref I cop the same. Some kid's dad who is richer than everybody and pays for _____ says that his son has to get his way or _____ will happen. If clubs/competitions lwon't back me for enforcing the rules then I'm severly compromised and can't do my job properly.

Same with Slater's head kicks (or whatever... players like that can cheat!) If the NRL won't back refs and suspend players like Slater for obvious breaches of the rules then refs will feel uneasy about penalising them. On that note if they're told to watch out for ______ then they will, which is unfair. The shoulder charge is a prime example this year...
