We all knew the Roosters signing SBW was going to lead to the rehashing of public ill feeling both to the man himself, and to the Roosters. And look, rightly so to an extent considering the less than idealic way in which SBW went about things when he left. Fair enough, we (the Chookies) signed up for it. However, it never ceases to amaze me the whole drama (sorry lack there of) around Falou and his departure.
Here is a guy who was given every opportunity by Rugby League. From Western Sydney sports schools, to his time at Marsden High (league excellence school in Sth East Brisbane) and his Goodna RLFC on the outskirts of Ipswich who poured money into him getting away on rep teams as well as developing him further. Rugby League provided him and his family better schooling, better oppertunities and a better life. But as soon as the chance offered itself he whored himself to the AFL. Whored himself to be the knife (try but failed) in the Rugby League heart. Paraded himself around in AFL glory through a season. He signed that AFL contract full knowing he was there to take away from the NRL. Not just in Western Sydney, but from the Rugby League as a whole. Why wasn't Falou scrutinised so personally? Why aren't people jumping up and down now about his imminent return to our game?
SBW hurt the Bulldogs club. He hurt the Bulldogs fans. He didn't pi55 all over the NRL and attempt to sabotage it. Falou did. Falou did it to a nation of fans. Now the media want to cream their pants over his possible return to league and the NRL/ARL swing their door open to him. It smacks of double standards and pure ignorance in my eyes.
Yes it means we are have a win over AFL. Yes it means we get to see the best of the best. Yes it's more bums on seats. And because of the I hope he does sign with the Eels. All of that is great. But I just hope the what's good for the gander is good for the goose.
Lastly, when Falou left I said to a number of friends it (Falou leaving) wouldn't matter in the end. Why? Because history shows for every SBW that leaves the game there is a Greg Inglis in the waiting. For every Falou that leaves there is a Ben Barba. For every Karmichael Hunt that leaves there is a Mark Gasnier wanting back in. From every Tuqiri, Matt Rogers, Dell Sailor.... The greatest game has always prevailed.
For the record I don't blame any athlete for making 'hay while the sun shines'. But my god double standards pi55 me off! Be interested to hear the chookpens thoughts. Positive or negative.
