The Bulldogs have been rattled by an immediate release request from star centre Bronson Xerri, just one game into their 2026 campaign.
Canterbury centre Bronson Xerri will seek an immediate release.
It is a sensational development given Xerri, 25, has two years remaining on his current contract.
Xerri, who joined Canterbury in 2024, is unsettled at Belmore after being shifted to right centre this season.
It is unknown whether there are other reasons behind Xerri’s looming departure although there are rumblings Canterbury could name rookie Mitchell Woods into the halves, when he returns from a hamstring injury, and switch five-eighth Matt Burton to the centres, where he began his career and also represented NSW at Origin level.
Xerri was part of Canterbury’s round one side which defeated St George Illawarra during golden point in Las Vegas.

It is becoming increasingly likely that Xerri has played his last game for Canterbury although the Bulldogs are unaware of any request release at this point.
There were suggestions Xerri may not even return to Belmore.
Xerri has told friends he wants to quit the Bulldogs immediately.
Canterbury has a round two bye but are aware of the speculation surrounding Xerri.
Melbourne is one club touted as being a possible suitor, given the Storm’s search for an outside back stalled after Zac Lomax was denied a move to Victoria.
Parramatta is another club who could show interest given Lomax has left the club with manly possibly looking to replace Roosters-bound Reuben Garrick next season.
Clearly Xerri will prove hot property on the NRL open market.
Xerri’s move could potentially leave the Bulldogs short on backline depth with Enari Tuala the only other recognised centre outside of captain Stephen Crichton, who plays on the left side.
Canterbury plays Canberra this Thursday night at GIO Stadium with Xerri likely to be missing.
Xerri joined the Bulldogs after completing a four-year drug suspension and has quickly established himself as one of the NRL’s elite centres.
After a strong debut season at Canterbury, Xerri was rewarded with a contract extension until the end of the 2027 season.
Xerri ran for 144 metres in Las Vegas and logged two tackle busts and 24 tackles.
The Bulldogs have long held a belief that Woods and Lachlan Galvin will be the club’s long-term halves.
Xerri has played 44 of his 66 NRL games for the Bulldogs.
