Ok Jack, sorry for upsetting you. Wasn't dumping on anyone. The question says "the best player we've ever poached" not "what signing contributed the most to our club".

Maybe you can start a thread asking the latter? Be quick though, Bates will likely beat you to it.

Ha, no upset mate. Just being a bit provocative to spice up the forum. Thought you might slap me but were gentle. Actually if you were gonna put up an Immortal Artie would have been better. I shamefully missed him myself focussing more on this century. Maybe we should seek the Masters intent for this thread. I'm sure these some deep thinking behind it.

It's a very exclusive club. Quite rightly. As great as Freddy and Teddy were and are, they're not immortals. They are both a slight level below Johns. Both are utterly fantastic footballers, who have had stellar careers at every level. There are many, many great footballers, who will never be immortals. Billy Slater tops Teddy, as painful as that is to say. He's closer in line than Teddy for sure. And Lockyer trumps Freddy. Only just, but he does.

99.99999999% of all first graders will never be an immortal. As it should be.
        Not yet anyway!

Fittler's resume is superior with the only blemish being his coaching career which I'd imagine doesn't come into it.

Kevin Hastings was never classified as an import though under the 13 import rule during that time (1975-1984) so he would be a local junior - The old * next to players names denoting the player as an import in being from another clubs defined junior league area.

Kind of shocking people would suggest anyone else.

No Freddy, no club. We were on the brink of extinction. He made us relevant.
There are entire generations of fans who wouldn't even remember him playing at Penrith. That's how much of a Rooster he is. He does a lot of promo work for my workplace and everyone just associates him with the Roosters now. When was the last time anyone saw him wearing a Penrith tie for example?

Don't believe too much bullshit from the banana benders.

James Tedesco is statistically a more dominant fullback than Slater.

Slater benefited immensely from the era he played in, surrounded by Smith, Lockyer, Cronk, Thurston, Inglis etc in Origin and for the Storm. It was a once in a generation group of QLDs.

Teddy has rarely had that kind of luxury for long. The Roosters have had good teams, but nothing like the dominance of the Storm in that era. NSW for much of Teddys tenure has been poor, with Tedd being one of the few bright sparks and his workrate and stats always up to scratch too.

In terms of pure playing ability as a No.1, I have Teddy ahead. Granted, it is bloody close and it takes nothign away from how good Slater was. Teddy is just simply a bees dick better.

I remember standing on the Northern hill at Penrith Park in 1995 watching Brad Fittler and Matt Sing playing for Penrith and thinking goody as it had already been made public that they were coming to Easts.
I was a but upset watching the reserve grade though as i knew Rod Silva had gone to the dark side and would be playing for the Dogs and was cut loose not long after that game.

That made me laugh Horrie..I was thinking back to my 40th which I held at the club and a lot of my friends are Penrith fans. One of guys cracked that our entire fan base could fit in the leagues club foyer and I hit back saying well at least we have jobs and teeth..and one of the girls had accidentally picked up an entire cheese wheel from the buffet we had and I told her not to worry..that Freddy would have wanted her to eat it..we were all a bit 'under the weather' by that stage..They used to cover my monitors with Penrith posters whilst I was at lunch (this was around 2004) and I would say "Yippee! Look at all those lovely future Roosters..."

Amos Roberts was another from the Riff..I'd forgotten he went to Wigan too like Fletch..

Luke and Jake Friend wrote their names in wet concrete around Clovelly back in the day..Arden St I think it was.

I loved dear Remi..he was ripped off I tell ya in that last semi final against that club..

yeah, poached often isn't the right word. freddy had to leave the panthers, wingy left souths because they were kicked out. not to mention that no one held a gun to the head of the players who left clubs to join us.

who's the best player to have been poached from us? ron coote would be hard to beat. grew up in kingsford but was poached by the stroke of a pen

                              (Poached) High profile, already established and had significant impact;

                              Freddy
                              SBW
                              Cronk

Heaps to wrap below that level; examples like Teddy, JWH but hadn’t accomplished as much when they joined, as when they left/ will leave us.

John Mayes is on Sally's imported list.

Schooner was pointing out that Mayes is Bondi bred.
