  • Hugo and Rodwell

Chalk and cheese. One is a first grader. The other looks like a very small Jersey Flegg player.

Only a trial but Hugo was running the show. Rodwell can't do anything like that at this point.

    Reality bites.

Yes Hugo is a first grade level half and Rodwell is a teenager learning his craft.

If this reality biting for anyone, then welcome back to reality.

Wouldn’t have anything to do with Hugo being 4 years older than Toby, do you think?

I dont know why youre bring up & comparing Hugo & Rodwell.
Of course Hugo is ahead of Rodwell, no-one would pick Rodwell in FG over Hugo if Cherry or Sam go down.

                To put it in perspective...
Last year was Toby Rodwells 1st season playing against men - and even then he didn't break into the NSW Cup team until round 12
Hugo Savala has been playing NSW Cup for 3yrs

So of course he is meant be be more developed at this point of time, I'd be worried if he wasn't

The people expecting Rodwell to come into NRL guns blazing as our main #7 in 2027 are getting a bit ahead of themselves, he needs time to develop
The fact that Sam Walker was able to do this in 2021 goes to show how much of a freak he is...

If DCE retires this year we run with Savala/Walker no doubt about it.
Rodwell has time on his side, lets see if he has the patience

It's the Chook Pen way. Especially in regards to halves.

I think some are addicted to immediate gratification.

But the reality is, the number of talents that come into firsts & play at a high level immediately are few and far between - its not the norm by any stretch.

Toby is doing okay, as it's a big jump from junior reps to senior reps. Junior Reps are an 8 or 9 (SG Ball) game regular season comps plus finals.

A full 24-game regular season comp and finals is a different ball game — the week-in-week-out grind can find youngsters out in that they may not have the goods required to play longer comps and ever progress to the NRL.

There have been many highly talented youngsters in junior reps over the years that never fulfilled their potential in the Senior Grades.

Not saying that's Toby though, as he played 14 NSW Cup games and 1 Jersey Flegg game in Senior Reps in 2025 and performed well.

He will be 20 in a few weeks and will likely start in the NSW Cup instead of Jersey Flegg in round 1 2026.

That's all fine, thanks for your "perspective".

Give Rodwell his years of development and hope he improves to the required level, no problem.

I'm just giving credit to Hugo, for already being at that level. The level we hope Rodwell gets to. He's a long way from first grade level at this point imo.

                      Hugo's already there.
