I didn’t start a Haas thread just to drool over Souths. It was clearly about our recruitment and how we’ve lost players without replacing them. Haas going to Souths is relevant because it highlights the gap.

I also put a general Haas thread in the main RL section for broader discussion. Different context. Not that deep.

      they currently have
      gray $600k
      Graham $700k
      Wighton $800k
      Latrell -$1m
      Walker $800k
plus Murray, Fifita, cheese and arrow all on big coin and now haas for id say well over $1m
The first thing I thought. Good old Wayne finally getting his revenge on the Broncos.

Wighton has been bog average since leaving the Raiders in search of a premiership.

Jack is 33. Time is slowly running out.

What has Souths signing Payne Hass got to do with our recruitment? There are 17 other teams that did not recruit Payne Hass. What is this gap you speak of?

Red, I know a great removalist company that specialises in small fast moves.

The 'gap' is about proactive versus reactive recruitment. While we’re linked to every big name under the sun for months (usually driving up their price), Souths just went out and clinicaly filled a massive hole in their pack with the best prop in the game. It’s frustrating seeing a direct rival land the best while we’re still talking about 'potential' targets and missing out.

Both Hass & Tino would not come for anything less than $1.2mill. Yes, they’re great players but add that amount to a decent spine and you don’t have a lot to play with for the rest of the squad.

I think Whyte could very likely become our ‘Hass’ at a significantly lower price.

I agree on Whyte; his ceiling is massive and the value-for-money is clearly better for our long-term balance… although seeing our biggest rivals assemble a pack with Haas, Fifita, Murray, and Duncan is grim. I trust our system to develop Whyte into that top-tier prop, but it definitely adds some extra pressure on our recruitment to ensure we aren't bullied by that Souths middle for the next few years.

Actually the focus for us is our pathways system. Talks of the Roosters signing Keon, Tino and Haas was all media conjecture driven by player agents.

Pretty sure signing Reece Robson was a proactive recruitment and for a prime example of reactive recruitment look no further than South Sydney with the likes of The Cheese, Fifita, Whighton, Josh Shuster, Adam Elliot and Jayden Sullivan to name a few.

Could you imagine his price tag when he becomes a free agent at the end of 2029.

He'll be 27 years old and in his prime come 2030.

Minimum $1.5 mill a year imo.

I’ll give you the Robson/Souths point, but calling us 'proactive' is a stretch when you look at 2027.

We’re losing Angus Crichton and Mark Nawaqanitawase to Union, and DCE is essentially a one-year band-aid. By 2027, we're going to be thin in the back row again. It feels like we’re just delaying the 'patchwork' phase rather than actually solving it. We've got the hype for this season yes, but long term is a question mark.

Sure, a lot of links are agent/media noise. But pathways and proactive recruitment aren’t either/or — the best clubs do both. The frustration is the outcome.

There's plenty of water to pass under the bridge before we hit season 2027.

The only player of note we have signed for 27 is Ruben Garrick but I'm not a big fan.

Our pathways are full of potentially high quality NRL standard backs, forwards and halves but only time will tell if our pathways produce the goods.

Souths have done very well by signing Hass but I still believe our squad will be superior to theirs in 2027. For a start they need to find a high quality half.

I am not trying to be argumentative Chookmaster just giving my opinion.
