  • Savala set to sign new deal at Sydney Roosters despite arrival of Daly Cherry-Evans

    From the DT

An insistent Hugo Savala wants to stay and fight for his position at the Sydney Roosters.

This masthead has been told halfback Savala is poised to reject rival interest and sign a new two-year-deal to the club.

Clearly, Savala isn’t walking away from a challenge.

The 23-year-old had thrown himself on the open market after the Sydney Roosters bought Manly star Daly Cherry-Evans, who plays the same position as Savala.

While Cherry-Evans and Sam Walker will start in the halves next season, Savala will now attempt to somehow force his way into the Roosters’ top 17.

That may mean coming off the bench although the club has signed gun utility Connor Watson until the end of 2027.

He could also be considered as a 13.

Savala, who stands at 194cm and can play halfback or five-eighth, had been linked to the Perth Bears, North Queensland Cowboys and Canberra although the Raiders ruled out any interest.

A local junior who attended Scots College, Savala said this year: “I know I’m an NRL halfback.”

Savala was coming off contract after 2026 but looks set to remain a Rooster until the end of 2028.

Friends claim Savala wants to learn the craft of playing halfback from Cherry-Evans over the next year.

“I love Hugo and his attitude,” Sydney Roosters captain James Tedesco said recently.

“He wants to stay at the club. He’s a local junior and he exceeded a lot of expectations last year with how he played.

It’s a great opportunity for him to learn off one of the great halves in our game.”

Roosters coach Trent Robinson, along with several big stars including Cherry-Evans, Tedesco, Walker, Lindsay Collins and Victor Radley, are currently trekking the Kokoda Trail so any formal announcement on Savala won’t come until next week, at the earliest.

The deal isn’t 100 per cent finalised but it will happen.

Cherry-Evans, 36, hasn’t committed beyond 2026 so Savala may only need to wait another year before reclaiming his spot in the club’s halves.

Savala enjoyed a breakout 2025, playing 21 games for a Roosters side eliminated in week one of the finals. He quickly jumped halves Sandon Smith and Chad Townsend to claim a starting halves spot.

“I’ve tried to introduce myself to most of the group over the last fortnight and it’s been great to have a small conversation with Hugo,” Cherry-Evans said last month.

“He was extremely welcoming, excited about our relationship, working alongside each other, and looking forward to learning some stuff off myself.

“I made it clear I’m here to learn off everyone and he’s someone I want to learn off too.”
    EASTS TO WIN!

I'm wondering if he didn't get any decent offers elsewhere which is why he is staying? I'm glad he is though, and my tip is that he'll see out this season as our first choice halfback.

let's see - I reckon he might end up at 13. If Toby Rodwell keeps developing, we're either gonna have to play him at 6 or lose him. Hugo's a big lad who tackles pretty well with a big boot. He's not gonna turn into Isaiah Yeo but a ball playing 13 would be great.

I didn't want Daly to come but I do think he's gonna get at least 6 weeks to start the year and if he plays well, it'll be him and Sam and then we've got to work through all the other options. Once Victor gets back (and assuming Nafahu, Robson, Collins, Victor, Cono and Leniu have locked in places) we're gonna have to fit Egan, Nat, Foketi, Steep, Wong and Hugo into 4 bench spots...and that's even without Va'a Losalu and Ioelu who played brilliantly in the recent internationals

he could have easily spat the dummy and took off early however keen to hold his spot and bide his time!
I think he can work well with Walker
big boot on him! Maybe needs to learn how to set up the guys outside him a little but seemed very confident for his first year in first grade

Correct if rodwell is going to be the next thing next to Sammy Hugo could sit in at 13 eventually

Angus is there as well and Wong will certainly be in the 17 most likely 11

Another non story from the DT to satisfy NRL HQ daily quota of league stories. Pathetic journalism.

A good problem to have - you need quality depth to win the premiership.

I know he sees himself as a halfback, but he has all the qualities to play a Isaah Yeo-type game- big, strong ball player who is a excellent defender. If theres 1 negative on his game (and I may be wrong) im not sure he has much pace-so moving to lock would be beneficial for him long term.

think he'll end up a ball playing 13, and a bonus he can kick.
If we have injuries in centres, he could fill in there as well, big unit, covers a lot of space, prob get burnt on outside occasionally.
Injuries and suspension, i think he'll see lots of footy in 2026.
He showed his toughness in 2025, he's on the right track.

Should never been in doubt, a 6 or 7 that can tackle.

I'm starting to think that the theory Walker will end up North eventually might be true.....
Both the Cowboys or Titans will have enough money to spare - His brother is already in Nth Qld

By 2028 could very well be:

                            6.Savala
                            7. Rodwell
                            13. Fa'asuamaleaui

I'd like to see him given a run at lock in the trail games.

Savala's determination is his greatest asset imo so he could well become a handy 13 if he sets his mind to the task.
