  • Tedesco - 2026 & Beyond

Article in the SMH today about Tedesco re signing for with the club for 2026 and beyond. Teddy has lost a half a step in the last few years, but he is still an elite FB. With Suaalii and Manu leaving to chase some cash we're thin in the backline and I can't see anyone close to becoming our long term 1.

A $1.8m, 2 year deal sounds about right IMO.

    -

James Tedesco is eyeing a third NRL premiership and a contract extension in what shapes as a pivotal few months for the Sydney Roosters captain.

Speculation over the future of Roosters halfback Sam Walker beyond 2025 has increased over recent weeks, but Tedesco is hopeful he can strike a new deal to remain at Bondi Junction before becoming a free agent on November 1.

The 31-year-old captain could command more than $1 million a season on the open market, but might struggle to fetch that amount at the Roosters, given the club is yet to nail down Walker. Brandon Smith is also without a deal beyond the end of 2025.

Tedesco has been excellent at the back for the second-placed Roosters and backed himself to continue playing for another three or four years.

“The body is feeling good, so I don’t think there’s any reason to not want to keep playing,” Tedesco told this masthead.

“I’m the captain of the club, I’ve really enjoyed my career here and I want to finish my career here. I don’t know how long that [future] looks like, but in terms of my body and [how I feel] mentally, I’m in a really good place.

“I wanted to focus on my footy this year and let that do the talking. There’s no reason to stress or overthink things. Hopefully, we can get something done in the next couple of months. That would be ideal, but I’m putting all my energy into the finals.”

Melbourne fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen is off contract next year but is expected to re-sign, which would likely result in Storm youngster Sua Fa’alogo becoming a free agent in 2026.

But Tedesco’s leadership will be too important to the Roosters, who lose Luke Keary and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves to Super League at the end of this year and Joey Manu to Japanese rugby. The trio have a combined 716 games worth of NRL experience between them.

Tedesco is relishing the chance to keep setting the standard for the next-generation Roosters.

“[Another] big thing about being a captain, it’s not just about you playing well, you need to make sure everyone else is on, and we’re playing good footy as a team – that’s been a big positive for me this year,” Tedesco said.

The Roosters moved into second on the ladder after beating the Gold Coast and face Canberra and South Sydney in the final fortnight.

Waerea-Hargreaves will miss the next three games after pleading guilty to a high tackle and apologised to Tedesco moments after Sunday’s incident.

“Any time you line up and see Jared, you’re intimidated,” Tedesco said. “It sucks it’s coming up to his last few games, and he’ll now miss a few of them. At least we’ll have him back for the important ones.

The Roosters will hold their inaugural Emergency Services event on Sunday, which will feature Amy Scott, the police officer who gunned down Westfield Bondi Junction killer Joel Cauchi, delivering the game ball via helicopter.

He looking fresh King James , he hasn't been drained from origin and looks like he could keep on keeping on. I hope he retires from the rep footy though....

      He's been great this year.

His next contract will be when he is 33 though, I think we need to be cautious on how we value that because there will be some level of deterioration to his play which is only normal.

His leadership and experience will be invaluable though.

I'd picture that like Mini and Cords, Teddy loves the club so much that he'll be willing to take unders in order to stay.

One can bag him but IMO short of signing what... Ponga, Walsh, Edwards, Pap, Trbo or Hynes (none of whom are available or would wanna play for us... and some of whom either don't play FB or are perpetually busted), there's few FBs in his kinda class.

The other week against Parra, Billy Slater of all was saying 'Teddy is doing the kinda stuff that only Jaryd Hayne can do'... and Slater farkin' hates us (every time we're winning he seems to either go quiet or make some smug comment about us getting lucky).

IMO Teddy's one of the best ever. He's staying and he's got more premierships in him...

He’s one of our best ever! I don’t think anyone will claim 5-6 Jack Gibson medals in a row again
back to his best this year and hopefully reduced rep commitements will keep him fresh and focused
deserves to go out on his terms and won’t play for anyone else
if we get Teddy and walker re signed that will have us in good stead for 2026 and further
cheese will need to wait to next year to see his form

Definitely needed for leadership and stability . A roosters legend, however he’ll struggle to win the Jack Gibson medal this year as Angus will push him for it , despite starting the season in NSW Cup.

Teddy is playing well and he looks to be enjoying his footy again. His experience moving forward will be priceless with a number of senior players retiring or moving across to RU.

If he re-signs it would probably rule out Ponga coming.

Would take Teddy every day over Ponga. For what he offers both on and off the field

Would also rule out Pap, Walsh, Trbo, Edwards, Hammer, Hayne, GI, Slater, Barba, Towers et. al. coming

I'd given him a 2 year extension. Then if he continues the future contracts on a year by year bases. He has earned the right to call it on his terms.... not that he is ready for retirement. He's definitely got more left in him.

With his injury record, we would have been silly to even entertain the idea Vas mun.
