  • 8 Point Try

Just watching Tom Deardon get awarded an 8 pt try and wondering why we didn't get one when Dom Young was taken high when scoring??

Would have tied it up at 32 each

I thought similar just seeing the Tom Dearden 8 point try.

They seem to be really inconsistent with the ruling of 8pt tries, seems to just randomly pop up in the odd game here or there.

There was an earlier incident where Teddy was taken high with a swinging arm (no penalty). Another where Crichton had his leg pulled and then was pushed as he was playing the ball (knock-on), Young got that crunching tackle earlier on (penalty - no report or suspension just a free kick). Blah blah blah.

Not saying any of this cost us the game (our own stupidity did that) but I said it when Young got a send-off and 2 week suspension for a careless high tackle. The undocumented alternative to such contact is to either ignore it or just award a free kick and move on. I still think using that as an example of the absolute worst kind of high tackle was a complete farce and all these moments remind me...

I'm glad we don't feign for penalties but we should make plenty of noise collectively and appeal (like you would in Cricket for an LBW) when a player is hit high and it's missed by the officials.

I liked the one where Keary was pulled back trying to score a try. Walker does the softest high tackle ever. Sharks penalty. Sharks try.

Also when Gus was called for a knock on with the markers all over him for 5 seconds. Next set penalty against JWH for not clearing the ruck as their player walks 2m off the mark into him. Sharks try.

Yes we beat ourselves with stupid mistakes.

But **** it would be nice to have one game called fairly this century.

We will never get any 50/50 calls that go our way from the g string

It's my understanding that an 8 point try can only be awarded if the act of foul play takes place after the try has been scored. Deardon was clobbered prior to scoring. Maybe they've changed the rules, who knows, the whole thing is a dog's breakfast.
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.

This is from the NRL site, NRL law and interpretations

Possible Eight Point Try If a player fouls an opponent who is touching down for a try, a penalty kick at goal shall be taken from in front of the goal posts after the attempt to convert the try.

Touching down includes: a. In the act of scoring; and b. Until the try scorer regains his feet.

Thanks for that. Possible 8 point try it could have been. I think that Deardon one hit a lot worse. Not that I guess that should matter.

This post is bringing back memories of the Roosters vs Manly grand final.

There was nothing in that contact.

We are victims of biased game engineering on a weekly basis. We have been for over a decade. It’s more the calls against us that infuriate me than the calls we don’t get.

Plenty of calls we didn’t get though. Spencer was held down twice when he came on at end of first half. No 6 agains given, he can only win those in a Riff jersey he’s finding that out. High shots on us every week where we get up and play it. Nonstop rubbish from the muppets with the whistle. Keary held back in the lead up to trying to score. Was minor but if it were against us, they would’ve blown it up and probably sin bin our player.

And when you speak to Non roosters fans they seem to think we get favourable calls?! I can only assume it’s the stupid 6 again from the GF they mention. Another reason to hate Canberra and want to put 40 on them.
