No strife for Brian
In the 'weed's column this morning. Just to add some balance to the Anti-Smith crusade!
FURTHER to our piece about Brian Smith and the push for the club's 2002 premiership-winning coach Ricky Stuart. It's been confirmed to me 10 times over there is a push for Stuart to coach the Roosters down the track, but the biggest thing Smith has in his favour - aside from his obvious coaching ability - is that club chairman Nick Politis is a massive fan. Politis has argued with some strong football minds about Smith - some of them say Stuart would be good at the club again - others push the virtues of arguably the NRL's best coach, Craig Bellamy. One of his favourite lines is to ask them how well Bellamy did when he coached NSW and he has a reasonable point when you consider that. Politis is known to be very impressed with Smith's work ethic, which is without peer. He is also well read and intelligent - Politis also views him a man of considerable honour. Politis does have a high opinion of Stuart and if things went rotten at the Roosters all of a sudden he knows of his interest. Stuart won't discuss his coaching future. What hasn't been reported about Smith's time at the Roosters is they are trying hard to develop young talent - the only significant purchase they made in the last couple of years was Todd Carney, and that was a mixed bag. They have signed James Maloney and they are expected to announce the signing of Sonny Bill Williams in the near future.
