I think many of us around 'this' generation had the little bets via our parents on the Melbourne Cup as kids. Some of us never lost the bug! And I'm glad of it.

My contribution to Dad's punting club was picking horses if the jockeys were wearing Parra colours...it worked!

My steel trap mind still remember some of the horses' names too including Leilani. Every time I'd go anywhere near Leilani Lodge or see it mentioned, I would always think of Dad and I felt like I was 7 years old again. Gai Waterhouse is also offering a prize for our silent auction for our work's other fundraiser, Move For A Cure, which I'm also taking part in next March as we are doing the 10km walk to raise funds for cancer research. The prize is a Sunday morning at the stables with her.

Gentlemen, please do get regular checks for prostate cancer. Just got off the phone and I now have 2 men in my family with it. Not going away for Christmas now but that's nothing compared to the pain this horrible illness is causing. One of my Roosters friends said her brother got his checked after seeing Darryl Brohman talk about his scare on the Footy Show back in 2010 and ended up having surgery too. Please take care.

I remember those shows well, my father said they were a fairly accurate depiction of how he grew up in the 30's. He was in Paddington which was a very rough neighborhood at the time.

They are hard to get on DVD Eddie. Mum and my aunt worked in clothing and shoe factories at Redfern and Mum used to cross Redfern Oval as a short cut.. Yikes...

Really tasteless comment in this thread where some of us are discussing our deceased parents, late partners and family members about to undergo surgery again this week for prostate cancer.

A new low has been hit it seems.

I will console myself with the knowledge that my comment RE the 30s in Paddington Surry Hills and surrounds being the time of the razor gangs Tilly Devine Kate Lee turf wars sly grog shops and cocaine being available at will and hookers on every corner was met with a smile from the poster who mentioned his Father lived in Paddington during that era. What a time it would have to have been alive. The whole thing is even better if it has inadvertently triggered the above poster.

I was at a special gig at the Opera House forecourt a few years ago with Steve Earle supporting (goin well PK) Paul Kelly. I love outdoor gigs better than indoor and two legendary artists on one card was brilliant.

I have just finished an anal cancer study for men. I had a colonoscopy done a few years ago and there were a few questionable things and areas of concern so my specialist recommended that i do this study, did the first bit last year and the procedure was more uncomfortable than a colonoscopy as i was awake and watching the procedure, they did a few scrapings and biopsies as they thought there maybe a couple of things of concern again but the results came back all clear, this year when they did the same procedure in September they had a good look and said no need for biopsies and only took a couple of scrapings, got the results back last week and all were good and the doctor running it said he was so confident of my results that they don't want to see me again. However when i had the procedure the doctor said my prostrate was slightly swollen but didn't think it was anything to worry about but will have it checked out properly with my next doctors appointment, my last prostrate check last year was fine and my doctor even commented on it when we were going back checking a few things in my medical records about 7 weeks ago.

Thanks MR, I will still keep a check on it though but it is a relief off my mind at the moment, now to get the other thing sorted out, can't get to see a specialist till mid December so keeping a close eye on it, the joys of getting older.

Like you said Horrie, "the joys of aging".
I had that procedure a year ago. They found 1/2 a dozen problems in the lower intestine but I was lucky they found them so early. They said I'd be right for 3 years.
Living with an enlarged prostrate is common at our age. Things you used to take for granted become a tad harder.
