Yeah he was the voice of reason in that moment or moments of madness but he was eventually ignored. he could bat but played in an era when keepers weren't expected to be top batsmen and sometimes he'd just go the slog so his average didn't reflect his talent.
a strong individual in a team of strong individuals.
