Religious freedom group says 200 troops sent complaints of superiors using extremist Christian rhetoric to justify war

US military commanders have been invoking extremist Christian rhetoric about biblical “end times” to justify involvement in the Iran war to troops, according to complaints made to a watchdog group.
The Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) says it has received more than 200 complaints from service members across all branches of the armed forces, including the marines, air force and space force.

One complainant, identified as a noncommissioned officer (NCO) in a unit that could be deployed “at any moment to join” operations against Iran, told MRFF in a complaint viewed by the Guardian that their commander had “urged us to tell our troops that this was ‘all part of God’s divine plan’ and he specifically referenced numerous citations out of the Book of Revelation referring to Armageddon and the imminent return of Jesus Christ”.
“He said that ‘President Trump has been anointed by Jesus to light the signal fire in Iran to cause Armageddon and mark his return to Earth’”, the NCO added.
The NCO’s complaint was filed on behalf of 15 troops, including 11 Christians, one Muslim person and one Jewish person. The complaint was first shared by MRFF with Jonathan Larsen, an independent journalist.
“Anytime Israel or the US is involved in the Middle East, we get this stuff about Christian nationalists who’ve taken over our government, and certainly our US military,” Mikey Weinstein, MRFF’s president, who is an air force veteran, told the Guardian.
“Military members are not really able to stand up for themselves, because your military superior is not your shift manager at Starbucks,” he added.
In a statement, Weinstein suggested the reports indicate an increase in Christian extremism in the military, noting that the complainants “report the unrestricted euphoria of their commanders” who perceive a “‘biblically-sanctioned’ war that is clearly the undeniable sign of the expeditious approach of the fundamentalist Christian ‘End Times’.”
He said that the complaints show a clear violation of the separation of church and state.
Pete Hegseth, the US defense secretary, is known for his embrace of Christian nationalism. He previously endorsed the doctrine of “sphere sovereignty”, a worldview derived from the extremist beliefs of Christian reconstructionism (CR). The philosophy calls for capital punishment for homosexuality and strictly patriarchal families and churches.
In August 2025, Hegseth reposted a CNN segment on X focusing on pastor Doug Wilson, a Christian nationalist who co-founded the Idaho-based Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches (CREC). In the segment, Wilson says he does not believe women should hold leadership positions in the military or be able to fill high-profile combat roles.
“I would like to see this nation being a Christian nation, and I would like this world to be a Christian world,” Wilson said.
In response to a request for comment on the complaints, the Pentagon did not reply, instead sharing public clips of Hegseth discussing the operation in Iran.

The Israeli president, Isaac Herzog, had a secret meeting with Australia’s director general of security, Mike Burgess, during his visit to Australia last month, the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation has confirmed.
Under questioning in the Senate from the ACT independent senator David Pocock on Tuesday, the foreign minister, Penny Wong, said questions about Asio “were often very sensitive”, but refused to confirm the meeting.
Outside parliament, Pocock said he believed it was “unprecedented” for a foreign head of state to be granted access to the domestic intelligence facility.
Later on Tuesday, an Asio spokesperson confirmed the meeting to the Guardian.
“Australian intelligence agencies maintain strong and enduring working relationships with their foreign partners,” the spokesperson said.
“The president met with the Director-General of Security, and was briefed by ASIO’s counter-terrorism team on their work following the Bondi attack. Meetings such as this are important opportunities to discuss global threats and strengthen international cooperation.”
Herzog attended several public events in Australia, as well as declared meetings with political leaders. There was no visit to Asio headquarters or any other intelligence facility on his public-facing schedule.

Israel, alongside the US, launched a series of airstrikes on Iran at the weekend, that included missile strikes which killed Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Israel is not part of the Five Eyes intelligence sharing network of which Australia is a member.
In Senate question time, Pocock asked: “Did Israeli president Isaac Herzog visit Asio headquarters during the course of his recent trip to Australia?”
Wong responded that she was “not in a position where I can answer your question”.
“Obviously, in relation to that particular entity, we are cautious about what is said. But I can provide some further information on notice.”
Pressed on whether she was personally aware if Herzog visited Asio, Wong told the Senate: “Questions about that agency are often very sensitive.
“You ask about one of Australia’s security agencies, now obviously they’ve … been extensively involved in the investigation and circumstances of the Bondi attack. If I am able to provide you with further information, senator, I will.”
Outside the Senate chamber, Pocock told the Guardian he was disappointed the government would neither confirm nor deny the president’s Asio visit, saying Australians deserved greater transparency from their government.
“Constituents raised with me a concern that the Israeli head of state, president Isaac Herzog, visited Asio headquarters in the course of his recent visit to Australia. The stated purpose of this visit was to provide support to Australia’s Jewish community.
“A visit by a foreign head of state to the headquarters of our national security and intelligence agency would, I believe, be unprecedented.”

Herzog was invited in the wake of the antisemitic Bondi massacre in December, in which 15 people were killed. In Australia last month, Herzog said his four-day visit was one of solidarity. “I have come here in goodwill and in a message that the people of Australia and Israel are close friends and allies since the days of old,” he said.
But the trip was mired in controversy, and the government faced significant criticism, even from within its own parliamentary ranks, for inviting the president of a state accused of committing genocide in Gaza.
Protests followed Herzog’s presence in every city he visited, and the Sydney demonstrations were marred by police violence, including officers punching protesters and dragging Muslim men who were praying.
Herzog, elected by the Knesset to the largely ceremonial position of president in 2021, was personally named by the UN commission of inquiry as having incited genocide against the Palestinian people of Gaza. Israel’s foreign ministry has previously rejected the commission’s report as “distorted and false”.
Shortly after the 7 October Hamas attacks on Israel in 2023, Herzog said all Gazans were responsible for the violence which killed 1,200 people: “It’s an entire nation out there that is responsible,” he said. “It is not true, this rhetoric about civilians who were not aware and not involved. It is absolutely not true.”
Herzog later qualified his statement, and said he had been taken out of context, noting he also said Israeli soldiers would follow international law.
More than 70,000 Gazans, including 20,000 children, have been killed by Israeli attacks on the occupied territory since 2023.
In late 2023, Herzog was pictured signing an Israeli artillery shell being prepared to be dropped on Gaza, writing in Hebrew on the munition: “I rely on you.”
He later conceded it was “an error” to sign the shell, and “lacking taste”.

The underlying 'elephant in the room' that modern society has to deal with is Islamic extremism. Until free democratic societies are somewhat united and clear about this, there will continue to be conflict.

Australia will follow Britain's lead and expel a senior Israeli diplomat after a wide-ranging probe found the Jewish state was involved in the fraudulent use of Australian passports.

Foreign Minister Stephen Smith told parliament Israel's act was not what Australia would expect from a friend.

"This is not what we expect from a nation with whom we have had such a close, friendly and supportive relationship," he told parliament. Israel responded by saying the decision was regrettable.

"The embassy of Israel expresses its regret for the Australian decision," a spokesman told AAP. "We feel it is not reflective of the extensive relationship between the two nations."

But Mr Smith said the passport fraud was intolerable. "No government can tolerate the abuse of its passports, especially by a foreign government," he told reporters.

Canberra's stern action follows a wide-ranging investigation, initiated after it emerged Australian passports were used in the killing of senior Hamas official Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in Dubai in January.

The Israeli diplomat, who will not be identified, will be withdrawn from Australia within the week. But the government denies the step will harm relations over the longer term. Mr Smith said the decision wasn't an act of retaliation for the passport abuse.

"This decision is made much more in sorrow than in anger," he told reporters.

Australia informed Britain and the United States ahead of the announcement, as well as other key nations, including the United Arab Emirates - where the murder occurred - and France, Germany and Ireland, which were also victims of passport fraud.

Australia's ambassador in Tel Aviv was alerted to the government's decision on Sunday night and would meet Israeli officials.

"She will be providing Israeli officials in Tel Aviv at the opening of business with all of the information that I've made public," Mr Smith said.

The national security committee of cabinet was notified on Monday morning.

Canberra's decision, following Britain's response, will be an uncomfortable matter for the US, Israel's closest friend.

Jeffrey Epstein’s accomplice has received favorable treatment from the Bureau of Prisons.

WASHINGTON ― The Justice Department has to explain why Jeffrey Epstein’s sole convicted co-conspirator won a transfer to a cushy federal prison camp last year, Democrats told Bureau of Prisons Director William Marshall in a letter on Monday.

The Epstein Files Transparency Act specifically requires the government to release all documents related to Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year prison sentence for her role in Epstein’s sex abuse schemes. The text of the statute doesn’t distinguish between documents from her criminal case and anything more recent.

That means the Justice Department is legally required to put out any documents “related to her transfer to a minimum-security prison camp where she has been granted numerous unusual special privileges,” Reps. Deborah Ross (D-N.C.), Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) and Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) said in a letter to Marshall.

The Bureau of Prisons, which is part of the Justice Department, transferred Maxwell from a low-security facility in Florida to a minimum security prison camp in Texas. The transfer happened days after Deputy U.S. Attorney Todd Blanche conducted an unusual interview with Maxwell last year in which she said she never witnessed President Donald Trump behave improperly when she, he and Epstein were all partying together in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

“I have now had two conversations with the survivors, and they do not feel like they have gotten justice, and Ghislaine Maxwell getting special treatment is re-traumatizing to them,” Ross told HuffPost.

Under questioning from Ross at a House Judiciary Committee hearing last month, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said she had nothing to do with Maxwell’s transfer. And Bondi claimed, falsely, that Maxwell had been transferred to a facility with the same security profile.

“She was transferred, I learned, after the fact, to the same level facility, and that is a question for the Bureau of Prisons. I was not involved in that at all,” Bondi said.

(Lying under oath is a crime, one that Bondi’s Justice Department tried to prosecute, unsuccessfully, against former FBI director James Comey.)

Maxwell is seeking a pardon or commutation of her prison sentence from Trump, who hasn’t ruled it out. Trump said “I just wish her well” when she was charged with sex trafficking crimes in 2020, a year after Epstein’s death.

The Justice Department has withheld a significant amount of material from the public Epstein Library it set up in January to comply with the Epstein Files Transparency Act, including FBI forms memorializing agents’ interviews with a woman who claimed in 2019 that Trump sexually abused her in the early 1980s. (The accuser has reportedly faced fraud and theft charges in unrelated cases.)

The Bureau of Prisons has confirmed Maxwell was transferred but never explained why. There do not appear to be any documents relating to the transfer in the Epstein Library except for an August 2025 FBI news summary memo that mentioned a news story about the controversial transfer.

The documents should already be public, Ross said. “The fact that we have to write a letter to follow up on this is ridiculous.”
